Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, will today start a two day visit to Croatia and Serbia. The European Commission is co-organising with the two countries a workshop commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Nikola Tesla, inventor, physicist and engineer, whose work formed the basis of modern electric power systems. read more

Stem cell compromise allows approval of FP7 by Council 25 July 2006
The remaining obstacles in the way of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) were swept aside on 24 July when ministers found agreement on funding for stem cell research and nuclear research. The decision clears the way for a second Parliament reading of the FP7 proposals in the autumn, and the timely launch of the programme on 1 January 2007. read more

The European Commission is today holding a media briefing to present current EU-funded research on pandemic and avian influenza. During thematic briefings in research facilities in Belgium, leading European scientists will demonstrate research activities in the field of vaccines and antivirals for avian and human influenza.
