Knowledge Based and Decision Support Systems

Some of the first applications of Expert Systems were in medicine, normally for diagnosis, and this has been where most of the developments have taken place. Though this is acceptable, knowledge based systems may be used to support a wider range of functions in Medicine and Health care, from clinical to administrative, and to be incorporated in many technical features like intelligent interfaces.

So far different systems have been developed for differetn problems. There is an abundance of clinical and administractive procedures, and it would be cumbersome to have a different system for each of them and different methods of operating them. A disciplined approach to this type of application in health care is required, and a start has been made in the AIM Exploratory Action. While it is unlikely to be appropriate to attempt to have only one standard method for all uses, it is preferable that there is a limit to the number of methodologies to support clinical and administrative procedures. It is therefore important that methodologies be selected to be used for knowledge acquisition and for using the knowledge bases in practice. The aim should be to have a conventional methodology for each class of user, and for the sake of easy development during the life cycle of the systems, to have certain standards for the internal logic of the systems.
