Pilots for Integrating Medical Equipments and Information Systems

Subject areas have been selected for demonstrations and pilot traisl, to obtain reaction of users to their technical performance and, to a limited extent, clinical relevance.

In the fields of diagnostic and therapeutic functions, an increasing imbalance has appeared during recent years between the capabilities available to diagnosis and therapy. There is an interest in applying to therapy those technologies which are already used for diagnosis. Progress can already be seen in isolated application areas such as plastic surgery and prosthetics. There is also an inters in testing the intergartion of advance technologies, for example of imaging modalities, into stereotaxy and laser surgery.

In the biomedical laboratory, the developments of Information Technology and Telecommunications have been shown to lead to more effective and economic use of laboratory services. many of the current systems are, however, incomplete, for example when based on laboratory data without clinical information. Considerable improvements could be achieved in the cost-performance, quality, flexibility, reliability and speed of bio-medical research and health care if data can be combined and integrated.

In emergency situations, though assistance is needed quickly, the time and place where it is called for cannot be predicted. Developments in mobile telematic technologies are therefore worth monitoring and testing under constraints of the real-life conditions.
