Research programme (EEC, Euratom) to be implemented by the Joint Research Centre - Environment and resources -, 1977-1979

 
This JRC programme on environment and resources was drawn up in accordance with the Council Resolution of 17 December 1970 concerning the procedures for adopting research and training programmes (Official Journal No L 16 of 20.1.1971). Initially adopted for a period of four years (1977- 1980), the programme was replaced by a new four-year programme as of 1 January 1980 and unused funds were allocated to the new programme.

The programme was complementary to the Indirect Action and the Concerted Action Programmes conducted by DG XII and provided support to the Community Action Plan on the Environment. It was pursuant to the JRC programme of 1973-1976 in this field.
To provide scientific support to the Community Action Plan on the Environment.
Two parts:

- Study of pathways and effects of hazardous chemicals manufactured by industry in sizeable amounts and released into the environment:
. Environmental Chemicals and Information Network (ECDIN) for the storage of environmentally relevant information of these substances;
. Entry into the human body of heavy metals from automobile fuel and fossil fuel fired power stations;
. Deleterious effects of entry of an excess of phosphates and nitrogen compounds into water;
. Formation of particles in the atmosphere;

- Investigation of environmental and resource management applications for the Community of the new technology of aerospace remote sensing:
. Remote identification and inventorization of agricultural resources (crops and forests);
. European Association of Scientists in Environmental Pollution (EASEP) project using the Nimbus-7 satellite.
The Commission, assisted by the board of governors of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), was responsible for the implementation of the programme by means of the services of the JRC (Ispra).

The dissemination of the information resulting from the implementation of the programme was carried out in accordance with Council Regulation (EEC) No 2380/74 of 17 September 1974 (Official Journal No L 255 of 20.9.1974) which adopts provisions for the dissemination of information relating to research programmes for the European Community.
