Research programme (Euratom, EEC) to be implemented by the Joint Research Centre - Remote sensing from space -, 1980-1983

Remote sensing techniques have been used in the EURASEP (coastal pollution) and TELLUS (soil moisture) experiments.
New pilot projects such as ARCHIMEDES (pollution in the Mediterranean Sea) and SAR-580 (demonstration missions for microwave applications in Europe) were prepared.
To assess and demonstrate the potential of advanced satellites and sensors for the conception and design of a European land information and monitoring system, of remote sensing technology for the detection, monitoring and forecasting of pollutant evolution in estuaries and coastal areas and of hydrocarbon slicks resulting from natural or accidental causes, and of advanced satellites for the management of agricultural resources under adverse climatic conditions in Sahelian countries.
Two projects:

- Agriculture;

- Protection of the sea.
