Research Innovation Fund

 
The programme is fully open on an equal basis to all researchers employed full-time in the third level sector and non-profit research agencies/ organisations. Staff on fixed term contracts are eligible, provided that the term of the contract extends for the duration of the project.
The formal arrangement for the funding of the project will be between Enterprise Ireland and the host institution. For this reason, proposals must have the endorsement of the host institution at the time of submission.
To support academic researchers in Proof of Concept, i.e establishing that a scientific concept, from whatever source, is sufficiently robust, is seen to address a viable market and is not encumbered by intellectual property considerations. Grants to an indicative level of 70k EUR may be awarded for a period typically of up to 12 months or exceptionally 18 months subject to a competitive evaluation process.
4 call areas:
Materials and Manufacturing comprises of approximately 25% of the programme. Also Life Sciences, Informatics and Electronic Systems. Projects from other areas also accepted if of merit in the field of Science and Engineering.
The following type of projects will be considered for evaluation.
- Projects that will examine innovative concepts and demonstrate suitability to be steered into the commercial arena. The evaluation process will be based on the following criteria and weightings: -

- Technical Merit 50%
· Methodology
· Technical feasibility
· Benefits/Significance

- Commercial Potential 30%
· Evaluation of Potential Markets
· Sector Relevance

- Project Management 10%
· Quality of Project Plan
· Financial justification/Value for Money

- Track record 10%
· Competence of Proposers
· Previous Publications/Grants

Note: - special consideration will be given to new researchers and to researchers returning following career breaks.
