REgional innovation STrATEgy relies on researchers’ mobility

Objective

"Science is the driver of change in economic activity, in the delivery of public services, and in the private life of citizens in all professions and ages. Change reaches society through mobile individuals carrying innovation from laboratories to applications. Young researchers are in the best position to drive this process, and to benefit from the opportunity.
Trentino hosts quality institutions of higher education and research, as well as R&D centers of multinational corporations; FBK is part of the winning tender for the European Institute of Technology (EIT, I.C.T. call); the University of Trento (UNITN) holds the # 1 position in Italy according to the Ministry of Education. All master and doctoral courses at UNITN are taught in English. With this project, FBK aims at creating matching opportunities that will expand employability of incoming and returning post-doc scientists by industry and the public services.

Scientists recruited by FBK benefit from hospitality offices; tutoring and career planning; employment contracts with full benefits, independently of nationality and length of stay. Young scientists will be encouraged to perform stages in companies for up to 2 year sabbaticals, through structured relationships with local industry networks. FBK leads the regional effort to build and succeed in a number of knowledge-based clusters. As a result of this experience, FBK expects that candidates will substantially increase the range of employment opportunities, and become more knowledgeable as to how to best contribute their skills to industry and the public services. Employability and mobility of doctorate holders is a two-way process; it requires active partnership between companies and universities, including technology transfer and recruiting initiatives. However, training researchers about the key ingredients for a successful career in the private sector is a necessary task that FBK can perform. A better understanding of the interaction between research institutions and the private economy, development of transferable skills and training on competencies specific to industry are examples of such knowledge creation."
