Cel The proposed project explores the technological capabilities building in the software industry in Bulgaria. The project makes two major contributions to the existing body of literature. First, it develops an approach for analysing technological capabilities in a latecomer software industry, which has not been done so far. Second, undertaking the analysis in a transition country context allows to explore the impact of institutions in the process of technological capabilities building, an issue, which has been overlooked in the literature about technological capabilities building. The research adopts an interdisciplinary perspective in order to enrich our understanding about the process of technological capabilities building and to make the concept of technological capabilities building more cohesive. The research explores the process of technological capabilities building in the two major groups of companies to be found in the Bulgarian software industry domestic-oriented and export-driven companies. The study is based on qualitative and quantitative research, drawing upon the results from two surveys and case study research.
