Aspects of string gravity and cosmology

Obiettivo

The impressive level of precision in fields such as observational cosmology and experimental gravity represent an exciting challenge and a precious test for both theoretical cosmology and fundamental physics. In order to constrain the candidate theories for unifying all interactions, the observable implications of such theories on cosmology need to be examined in detail. My research project moves in this direction and aims to study some aspects of the (linear and non-linear) gravitational field dynamics as modified by superstring theory, especially in the contexts of 1) inflationary cosmology, 2) late-time cosmology and 3) brane-world scenarios.

1) I propose to study the black hole formation in a contracting Universe and apply the results to the and 'Pre-big bang' cosmology and to the ekpyrotic scenario, which are both inspired by string theory and involve a bouncing of the scale factor of the Universe at the end of the and 'inflationary-contracting' era.

2) I also propose to calculate in detail the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Anisotropies for those (string-inspired) models where the and 'quintessence' i.e. the dark energy field is coupled to dark matter. I would then constrain the parameter space of the theory against CMB observations. Another constraint on the coupling of the dark matter to a scalar field may come from the analysis of the non-linear evolution of structures in the Universe and this is another objective of my project.

3) I plan to study a full covariant and five-dimensional formalism for brane perturbations and apply it to brane cosmology in order to quantify the presence of the iso-curvature in the primordial density fluctuations. Again, such cosmological model will be constrained against observations. My last objective is to study the gravitational collapse on the brane through an expansion in the ratio of the initial density of the collapsing object to the tension of the brane.
