Nanomaterial Synthesis in Highly Swollen Hexagonal Phases templates

Obiettivo

The swollen liquid crystals can be used as soft templates for synthesis of nanomaterials. These swollen phases can be doped with metal ions at very high concentration without perturbing the initial structure. Our previous studies on lyotropic liquid crystalline phases (hexagonal or lamellar) with anionic surfactants have shown that it is possible to obtain nanomaterials (metals, oxides or polymers) of various morphology: fibres, nanowires, lamels... within these confined systems.

The present project is aimed at the synthesis of metallic nanostructures (using chemical and radiolytic reduction techniques), their characterisation and properties. The idea is to extend the synthesis to other liquid crystalline phases (hexagonal, cubic and sponge) obtained with cationic and nonionic surfactants and doped with various metals: Pt, Pd, Sn, Ag, Co, Ni. Small Angle X-ray Scattering experiments will allow us to analyse the structural characteristics of the doped liquid crystals.

Chemical and radiolytic (rays or electron beams) methods will be used to reduce the metal ions inside the mesophases and to obtain metallic nanomaterials of various shapes. First reduction and aggregation steps will be studied by nanosecond pulse radiolysis. Various techniques will be used to characterise these metallic nanomaterials: TEM, EELS, XPS, SAXS, AFM...We will be studying the relationship between the morphology and the catalytic activity of these nanomaterials.
