Cel Selective catalytic oxidations of organic molecules are among the most important industrial chemical processes. Chemical raw materials are principally hydrocarbons which are the product of petrochemical production. Due to their inert nature, their selective functionalization is a key objective of research in academia and industry. The aim of the project is the development of a novel class of homogeneous oxidation catalysts which are effective in the stereo-selective allylic oxidation of alkenes. In contrast to the majority of the previously studied copper complexes, these will be iron (and cobalt) based. Beyond the narrower goals of the proposed research, they provide the potential access to catalytic systems for the controlled oxidation of prochiral alkanes. The key to the practical implementation of the research program is the development of two novel classes of meridianally coordinating chiral ligands which are potentially suitable for enantio-selective transformations. The approach combines design- and diversity-driven elements and the efficiency of the iron catalysts will be tested with respect to a number of standard reactions which allow the comparison with previously reported chiral catalysts. High throughput analytical methods are will be extensively used in the optimization of catalyst performance.
