School Opportunity Structure and Student Achievement in Comparative Perspective

Objective

Most of the low achieving students are of low socioeconomic background. Low educational profile of their parents leaves these students in the educational system without any proper guidance. Scholars have emphasized the role of relations with peers and teachers in compensating for this negative background characteristic. Indeed, supportive and trusting relationships with peers, teachers and adults in school settings are essential to academic learning. However, little is known about the ways in which school opportunity structure shape these relationships. This project focuses primarily on two school types generating differing student achievements; Vocational High School (low student achievement) and General High School (relatively high school achievement) in Turkish educational system. In doing so, the proposed project aims at exploring in depth in what ways school opportunity structures in these two school types effect students’ school-based networks and their achievement.
