NANODESIGNED CHIRAL HYBRID ORGANIC-INORGANIC MATERIALS AS CATALYSTS FOR GREEN REGIO AND ENANTIOSELECTIVE OXIDATION REACTIONS

Cel

A major challenge in heterogeneous catalytic processes is the development of heterogeneous catalysts for asymmetric synthesis of fine chemicals. By following a new approach, this project intends to design and construct hybrid organic-inorganic materials consisting of a chiral pore system and four-coordinate transition metal ions as catalytic sites. The use of chiral bis(trialkoxysilanes) and supra-molecular assemblies of surfactants as templates will result in catalysts designed at the nano-scale level able to carry out the enantio-selective oxidation of different substrates (i.e. alkanes, alkenes and sulfides to give enantiopure alcohols, epoxides and sulfoxides, respectively). Since both the catalysts and oxidants (i.e. molecular oxygen, hydrogen peroxide) are environmentally friendly, these processes will represent interesting examples of the so-called green chemistry. The securing of the scientific objectives of this proposal would suppose a major breakthrough in the modern heterogeneous catalysis.
The background, previous experience and achievements of the applicant in this field will be crucial for attaining these goals by following a work plan which distributes the objectives by applying the research methodology and assures a constant work through the whole duration of the project. In addition, this fellowship would be able to contribute greatly to the development of the applicant’s potential as an independent world-class researcher through the acquisition of both scientific training and complementary skills, thus contributing not only to scientific but also lifelong personal achievements, according to the objectives of the Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowships.
