Predictive mechanisms in sensory-motor control - PredAction

Ziel

This proposal addresses an exciting feature of the brain - its remarkable ability to interact with the environment by a highly adaptive sensorimotor system. We propose to identify major principles of that system that allow it to operate and adapt much more efficiently than the most sophisticated modern robots. We hypothesize that predictive mechanisms are a key feature of natural sensori-motor control schemes and propose to investigate these in a joint experimental and computational approach. We will examine natural human movements in virtual reality environments, in which the experimenter can control and alter visual and haptic inputs during motor performance. The psychophysical experiments will be complemented by collaborative efforts with theoreticians exploring predictive mechanisms in computational models of motor control, and with physiologists who will investigate predictive signals within neuronal activity. The project will contribute to clinical applications in two ways. First, by testing Parkinsonian patients in our psychophysical experiments, we will investigate how the proposed control scheme is altered in movement disorders. Second, our work is designed to contribute to an ongoing research collaboration aimed at developing neural motor prostheses a new research field that opens promising solutions to a wide range of motor disabled patients.
The applicant will be hosted by members of the interdisciplinary centre for neural computation (ICNC) of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where she will collaborate with leading experts in the field of motor control. Through interaction with leading theoreticians, the applicant will deepen her proficiency in computational neuroscience. We expect this project to make a highly important scientific contribution to the field of motor control and to give the applicant a critical boost for the continuation of her scientific career.
