Spin-dependent transport in nanostructures

Obiettivo

Transport properties in atomic scale are attaining increasing amount of interest. The proposed project focuses on determination of transport properties of single molecules from density-functional first-principles calculations. The main emphasis is in the effect of magnetic leads and the spin dependence of the transport. The semi-infinite leads are treated with a novel embedded Green function approach based on the accurate linearized-augmented plane-wave method. Conductance can be calculated within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. During the previous work the researcher has established his expertise in many aspects of magnetism in the context of magnetic shape memory alloys. Within the proposed project the researcher shall complete his knowledge about magnetism especially on the molecular level. He will learn a completely new field of electronic transport together with new computational tools.
The interest in transport properties is increasing rapidly so that the researcher shall benefit a lot from the problems and methods he is going to learn. The stay in Germany should create many new contacts for the researcher which will help him on the future work. The complementary skills like increased responsibility of the research are going to be important in promoting further the scientific career of the candidate. The aspects of transnational mobility will result in the information exchange between Finland and Germany and help in developing the European research area.
