Towards Elimination of Growth Retardation in Marine Recirculating Aquaculture Systems for Turbot

Objectif

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems RAS offer significant advantages over open aquaculture systems. These advantages are heavily underutilized because application of RAS is limited. Growth retardation is the problem and until it is solved economic feasibility of aquaculture in RAS remains marginal significant aquaculture production in RAS will not be established and the advantages of RAS remain under-utilized. Growth retardation has been observed for most species cultured in RAS but the causes remain obscure. The turbot industry was the first aquaculture industry to be heavily affected by growth retardation as it was the first marine aquaculture industry that applies RAS on a large scale Growth of turbot in RAS is 15 20 lower and feed conversion rates are 0 3 higher compared to flow through systems. Individual farms have tried but were unable to solve the problem by themselves. Therefore they need to join forces with other farms and RTDs in this project. Without elimination of growth retardation it is either back to flow through systems or an insecure and marginally feasible future with RAS. We hypothesise that growth retardation is due to accumulation of growth inhibiting factors GIF in the culture water Both the fish and bacteria are believed to produce GIF.

The objectives of this project are Exchange analyse and document the results of obtained by individual farm experiments over the years. Establish the production presence and effects of GIF by the fish and bacteria Investigate means for GIF removal and prevention of its production. Establish the physiological status of fish cultured in RAS Overall it is foreseen that this project will result in a large increase of our knowledge and understanding of growth retardation in RAS This would be a large step towards elimination of growth retardation in marine RAS which is of major importance for all future aquacultures in RAS...
