Objectif With Voice over IP calls being offered for free or for a flat rate, Spam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) has the same potential to become a major annoyance for users worldwide as it is the current situation with e-mail spam. In SPIDER will be delivering a solution to detect and prevent unsolicited VoIP calls and instant messages. This solution will not only be designed to achieve a high detection rate but it will also be optimized to be resource efficient as well. The design of the SPIDER SPIT prevention tools will be based on two aspects. On the one side we will be benefiting from well-known SPAM prevention technologies such as white and black lists or filtering algorithms. These technologies will be investigated so as to assess their suitability for VoIP and be adjusted to take into account the details of the VoIP technologies and systems. On the other side novel approaches based that are derived from the VoIP technology itself such as inter-provider peering mechanisms or security enhancements for the used signalling protocols will be investigated and developed as well. The knowledge and tools gained from current and innovative schemes will then be combined into the SPIDER anti-SPIT solution so as to provide users and service provides a customizable and configurable platform that takes both the needs and capabilities of large service providers as well as single users into account. To assess the efficiency and usability of the developed tools and mechanisms, the SPIDER SPIT prevention system will be intensively tested and probed throughout the project by deploying it in SPIDER partners? " service offering. Thereby, in the context of SPIDER a set of tools and mechanisms will be designed and developed that enable the participating partners to roll-out products and services for anti-SPIT. The developed tools will then be either used by the partners directly or integrated into their current projects.
