Cel
Infectious emerging diseases involving arthropod vectors or vertebrate hosts threaten human health and stock breeding worldwide and respond fast and strongly to global change (intense travel and trade, natural hazards, societal and climate change…), particularly in the Caribbean with increased risk of diseases outbreak.
Anticipation of health crises through relevant research programmes and innovative disease-control strategies is thus necessary to preserve animal health, food security and human health in interconnected Caribbean territories and Europe.
The objective is to expand Guadeloupe research potential on emerging and vector-borne diseases along the ‘One-Health’ concept to improve the capacity of prediction and decision makers’ anticipation. The project will rely on an integrated approach, from genomics to surveillance and prevention strategies based on interdisciplinary analysis, aimed at facilitating the adoption of new knowledge by all stakeholders.
Specific objectives are: (i) reinforce Guadeloupe S&T potential on emerging and vector-borne diseases through the acquisition of a biosecurity laboratory Level 3 and recruitment of experienced scientists; (ii) develop strategic partnerships with outstanding European research entities (exchange of scientists, training); (iii) disseminate scientific information and knowledge to the scientific community, decision-makers and the public, (publications, meetings, web site); (iv) increase Guadeloupe innovation potential (diagnostic, vaccines, surveillance tools).
Sustainability will be ensured by paving the way for a Caribbean centre of excellence on emerging and vector-borne diseases, in collaboration with CaribVET and European partners.
It will result in a better integration in the ERA for the research community and upgraded RTD capacity. With support of the regional authorities and Structural Funds, it will contribute to regional development: alert system for disease outbreak, path to smart specialisation.
