Objective
BEYOND relies on existing state-of-the-art and interdisciplinary collaboration with twining organizations highly esteemed in the European Research Area, for Building Capacity for a Centre of Excellence dedicated to Natural Disaster Management in southeastern Europe, including European Balkan countries, with a potential to expand to an even wider geographic area through harmonizing the observational capabilities available in the partners. BEYOND a) sets up integrated observational solutions allowing different monitoring networks (space borne and in-situ) to cooperate in a complementary, unified and coordinated manner, b) create archives and data bases of long series of observations and higher level products, and c) make the observations and products available for exploitation with state-of-the-art science and models, hence providing the involved stakeholders, scientists and/or institutional users, with substantial information for down streaming to local needs for handling natural and human induced disasters. To accomplish this goals BEYOND is structured around 6 Work Packages namely, WP1 “Project Management”, WP2 “Personnel Recruitment”, WP3 “Infrastructure and capacity building”, WP4 “Dissemination”, WP5 “Exchange of know-how and experience”, and WP6 “Exploitation and Intellectual Property development”. It is a 36 month project building upon, a) the collaboration with high-level scientific organizations from Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Norway, Serbia, Swiss, and Turkey, and b) the support and participation of ESA, and WMO international organisations. BEYOND envisages for the recruitment of new researchers, and establishes a detailed exploitation and targeted dissemination plan through workshops, publications, web portal, etc. BEYOND covers all the priorities defined by the work program, substantially contributing to human, institutional and infrastructure capacity building.
