Objective
"This project is called DoctoRate on HIgh PERformance GAS separation membrane (DR HIPERGAS) and the consortium consists of two level one partners, the Catholic University of Leuven and Fujifilm, and two level two partners, TNO and the Unversitat der Bundeswehr Munchen.
The main research objective of the research program is to answer the scientific key questions concerning gas separation (GS) membrane functions, which inhibit their commercial market introductions. The project aims to design new thin layer membrane systems, suitable for use in the (acid gas) GS market. More specifically, the program aims to (1) improve the performance of thin selective CO2 separation coatings, (2) improve the membrane system stability for industrial applications and (3) gain a better understanding of the correlation between applied membrane material properties and gas separation performances.
To reach these objectives, the research program will involve research in new membrane material concepts, study membrane separation processes, as well as the application of innovative evaluation methods for membrane structure and performance.
The main training objective is to offer a unique training program, integrating a high leveled scientific education with an experimental research program in both, an academic and an industrial research environment. It aims to develop talented students into excellent researchers in the field of membrane technology and materials sciences, equally skilled to start a successful career in the Academic or in the private sector.
The three PhD students will receive on-the-job training in analytical techniques, material synthesis methods, processing technologies and design of membrane separation units, both on a lab/research scale and on an industrial/commercial scale. Moreover they will be involved intensively in general management and personal skills training programs, to prepare them in a wide sense for their future career in Industry or Academy."
