Integrating Mobile Applications into Teacher Education

Objective

Europe needs to equip its young population with digital competencies to gain and maintain its competitive advantage in the global economy. This need, as recognized by the European Commission, clearly requires a concerned research effort in preparing future teachers with necessary skills to integrate mobile applications into learning and teaching settings. Main purpose of this project is to provide, through research and development, methodological and curricular support to teacher educators so that they have research informed resources and curriculum for the integration of mobile applications into their teacher education programs. The specific objectives of the research are: 1) Establish criterion-referenced assessments to judge the educational value of mobile applications, 2) develop resources for teacher educators to help preservice teachers learn about mobile applications and apply it to instructional environments with learners, 3) develop and test research instruments that assess evidence of preservice teachers’ mobile-TPACK development, 4) design and deliver a new “Going Mobile in Teacher Education” open course that aims to develop pre-service teachers’ mobile-TPACK and disseminate the research-informed mobile application curriculum to the interested educators in Europe and around the world. These objectives will be achieved within 4 work packages that investigate Mobile-TPACK as a specialized form of teacher knowledge. The results will contribute to the overall quality of teacher education programs across Europe and better prepare future teachers who will be equipped with necessary knowledge and skills to utilize mobile applications which are the considered as one of the most promising and accelerating ICTs in the near future in Europe and around the world.
