THERMO AND MESOPHILIC ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF ABATTOIR WASTE.

Objectif



BENCH SCALE CONTINUOUS FLOW AND BATCH REACTORS WILL BE USED TO INVESTIGATE THE ANAEROBIC DEGRADATION OF OFFAL FROM SLAUGHTERHOUSES IN DIFFERENT MIXING RATIOS WITH MUNICIPAL SLUDGE. BOTH MESOPHILIC AND THERMOPHILIC TEMPERATURE REGIMES WILL BE INCLUED. FULL SCALE TESTING OF LABORATORY RESULTS IS ALSO PROPOSED. THE IMMEDIATE BACKGROUND FOR THE PROJECT IS THE FAST GROWTH OF CERTAIN SLAUGHTERHOUSES IN THE NORTH-JUTLAND REGION OF DENMARK, AND HENCE EXCESSIVE LOADING OF THE LOCAL SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT.
THE PROJECT WILL HOWEVER INCLUDE A NUMBER OF KEY PROBLEMS OF GENERAL INTEREST:
- ODOUR CONTROL, INACTIVATION OF PATHOGENS, AND SLUDGE DEWATERABILITY.
- POSSIBLE ADVERSE EFFECTS ON DIGESTER PERFORMANCE CAUSED BY CERTAIN FODDER ADDITIVES SUCH AS ANTIBIOTICS, TRACE METALS, AND DISINFECTANTS USED IN HOG FARMING FACILITIES.
- BETTER UTILIZATION OF EXISTING SLUDGE DIGESTERS.
- REDUCTION OF SEWAGE PLANT OPERATION COSTS THROUGH REDUCED NET ENERGY CONSUMPTION OR EVEN SURPLUS ENERGY PRODUCTION.
IN PERSPECTIVE A LARGE-SCALE PROGRAM COULD BE ENVISAGED, INCLUDING ANAEROBIC DIGESTION OF BIOGRADABLE ORGANIC WASTES FROM URBAN, INDUSTRIAL, AND AGRICULTURAL AREAS. A NUMBER OF RELATIVELY LARGE PLANTS RATHER THAN NUMEROUS SMALL DIGESTERS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED. THE PLANT LOCATION WOULD PREFERABLY BE WHERE THE BIGGER AMOUNTS OF WASTE ARE PRODUCED, AND TOWNSHIPS WOULD SERVE AS CONSUMERS OF THE EXCESS ENERGY PRODUCTION.
