Objective THE EXTRADITION OF GASES GENERATED IN SANITARY LANDFILLS HAS BEEN STUDIED FOR MAY YEARS, ESPECIALLY IN THE U.S.A. AND IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY. THESE GASES HAVE BEEN MAINLY VIEWED AS A HAZARD AT LANDFILLS BECAUSE OF THEIR COMBUSTIBILITY AND THE DANGER OF ASPHYXIATION. NOWADAYS, DUE TO THE RISING COSTS OF ENERGY, MORE INTEREST IS SHOWN IN THE RECOVERY OF THE ENERGY ESCAPING FROM LANDFILLS IN FROM OF GASES. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH PROGRAMME IS THE IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING LANDFILL METHANE RECOVERY TECHNOLOGIES AND INTEGRATION OF INNOVATION IN LANDFILLING IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE PRODUCTION AND/OR RECOVERY OF USUABLE LANDFILL GAS. THE PROGRAMME INCLUDES LABORATORY STUDIES OF THE VARIABLES AND PROCEDURES INVOLVED IN THE GENERATION OF GAS AS WELL AS EXPERIMENTATION ON SANITARY LANDFILL SITES, EITHER ALREADY COMPLETED, OR IN OPERATION. THE ENHANCEMENT PARAMETERS LIKE MOISTURE CONTENT, PH CONTROL, LEACHATE CONTROL, TEMPERATURE, DENSITY, NUTRIENT ADDITION WILL BE STUDIED. THE MANAGEABILITY OF THESE PARAMETERS AND ITS COST IN ACTUAL FIELD OPERATION WILL BE EVALUATED. THE LAST SECTION OF THIS PROGRAMME WILL BE FOCUSSED ON THE VARIOUS METHODOLOGIES AVAILABLE TO UTILIZE LANDFILL GAS.
