TAPIR-2012

Objective

The Transatlantic Post-Doc Fellowship for International Relations and Security (TAPIR) is a two-year programme for young academics with a background in international relations and international security. The fellows spend a total of 24 months in three different research institutions or think tanks in the United States and Europe in order to build skills in policy-oriented research and create their own networks. Fellows are working with a supervising researcher at the host institute and are integrated into relevant research units or projects there. Host institutes provide office space and overhead costs arising during the fellow’s period of research. The fellows’ research is published by their respective host institutions and/or in adequate academic journals. At the end of each year of the programme, a seminar brings together all fellows so they can exchange information about their experiences and present their research. The circle of participating institutes is composed of thirteen high profile research institutes and think tanks on both sides of the Atlantic as for example the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS), RAND Corporation, Chatham House (Royal Institute of International Affairs), United States Institute of Peace (USIP), and the German Institute for International and Security Affairs/Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP). The programme makes a substantial contribution to the creation of international networks and fosters mutual understanding. As highly accomplished academics looking for a career in policy-oriented research and consulting, TAPIR fellows will be able to experience different policy consulting approaches on the job and to forge contacts within the transatlantic policy community. In addition to the exchange of information and resources across boundaries and across the Atlantic, the fellowship programme provides a pool of qualified professionals for future employment in top-end policy consulting and research.
