IMPROVEMENT OF THE WEAR RESISTANCE OF SILICON- BASED CERAMICS.

Objectif

BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE WEAR MECHANISMS OF CERAMICS, AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE FABRICATION PROCESSES PGOF SILICON CARBIDE AND SIALONS DESTINED FOR WEAR PARTS AND CUTTING TOOL APPLICATIONS.

THE CERAMICS CONCERNED WILL BE SINTERED ALPHA SILICON CARBIDE AND SIALONS CURRENTLY DEVELOPED BY CERAVER, TARBES, FRANCE.
AN EVALUATION OF THE WEAR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PREPARED SAMPLES WILL BE CARRIED OUT. SLIDING CONTACT WEAR TESTS WILL BE MADE USING ROTARY AND RECIPROCATING MOVEMENT OF THE MATERIALS AGAINST THEMSELVES AND SELECTED METALS.
EXAMINATION WILL BE MADE OF THE NATURE OF THE WEAR MECHANISMS UNDER SPECIFIED CONDITIONS AND THEIR TEMPORAL VARIATIONS. THE WEAR COEFFICIENTS WILL BE MEASURED.

THE INFLUENCE OF ATMOSPHERE, LIQUIDS AND TEMPERATURE, AS WELL AS THE INFLUENCE OF SURFACE MORPHOLOGY ON THE WEAR PATTERN WILL BE ASSESSED.
TESTING WILL BE EXTENDED AT A LATER STAGE TO INCLUDE IN-HOUSE OR PETREATED SURFACES PREPARED BY CERAMIC COATING (CVD AND OTHERS), OXIDATION TREATMENTS AND SPECIAL TREATMENTS.

EXTENSIVE USE OF THE OPTICAL, AND SCANNING AND TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPE FACILITIES WILL BE MADE IN THE EXAMINATION OF THE SURFACES.
RELATED TO THIS STUDY WILL BE A PROGRAMME TO REALISE A MODEL WHICH WILL SIMULATE THE EFFECTS OF CONTACT LOADING FOR SUCH CERAMICS TOUGHENED BY THERMAL, HOT ISOSTATIC PRESSING AND ION IMPLANTATION TREATMENTS, WILL BE CARRIED OUT. FINALLY, THE WEAR BEHAVIOURS FOR SUCH OPTIMIZED CERAMIC COMPONENTS IN THE FORM OF CUTTING TOOLS FOR MACHINERY OF METAL ALLOYS WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

A FULL AND COMPLEMENTARY COLLABORATION BETWEEN LEEDS UNIVERSITY (UK) AND THE ECOLE DES MINES DE PARIS, EVRY, FRANCE (SUT-109-F) IS FORESEEN.
