SILVER SAVING BY SUBSTITUTING BRAZING ALLOYS WITH 30-55% AG FOR CUP ALLOYS CONTAINING 0-15% AG.

Ziel

TO REDUCE SILVER CONSUMPTION USED FOR BRAZING ALLOYS, AND TO CUT TOTAL BRAZING COST FOR THE JOINING OF COPPER AND COMPONENTS.

AT THE PRESENT TIME, 40-50% AG ALLOY IS USED TO MAKE MOST BRAZED JOINTS IN COPPER. ABOUT 500 TONNES OF SILVER ARE USED FOR SUCH A PURPOSE. IF CUP BRAZING ALLOYS CONTAINING 0015% AG COULD BE USED INSTEAD, LARGE SAVINGS IN THE ANNUAL CONSUMPTION OF AG WOULD BE ACHIEVED. THE AIM OF THE PRESENT STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE THE CREEP AND FATIGUE CHARACTERISTICS OF CUP BRAZING JOINTS, USING STANDARDIZED SPECIMENS AND TESTING PROCEDURES, TO ENSURE THAT THIS TYPE OF BRAZING ALLOY MEETS THE HIGH STANDARDS OF INTEGRITY NEEDED FOR A VAIETY OF JOINING APPLICATIONS.

THE CREEP EXPERIMENTS WILL BE STRESS-TO-RUPTURE TESTS. A STRESS-TO-RUPTURE CURVE WILL REQUIRE TESTING AT FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES (APPROXIMATELY 100, 500, 1000, AND 2000H), AND DUE TO AN EXPECTED SCATTER IN THE TEST, THREE SPECIMENS WILL BE REQUIRED AT EACH TEST CONDITION.

THIS PROGRAMME WILL REQUIRE THE DETERMINATION OF 8 STRESS-TO-RUPTURE CURVES ON STANDARD SHEAR TEST SPECIMENS PLUS 2 CREEP CURVES ON TUBE-SLEEVE (FITTING) SPECIMENS.

THE FULL CREEP PROGRAMME WILL REQUIRE THE USE OF 4 CREEP MACHINES OVER 3 YEARS.

THE FATIGUE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT FOR 30 SPECIMENS ON ONE MACHINE OVER 3 YEARS, AT TWO DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES AND FOR THREE BRAZING GAPS AND FIVE BRAZING ALLOYS CONTAINING DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF AG.

A/S DANFOSS OF NORDBORG (DENMARK) WILL CLOSELY FOLLOW THIS PROJECT AND WILL CARRY OUT EVALUATION AND TESTS ON INDUSTRIALLY PRODUCED BRAZED COMPONENTS.
