Objetivo TO PRODUCE A CORROSION RESISTANT COATING ON HIGH TEMPERATURE COMPONENTS IN ORDER TO INCREASE THEIR LIFETIME AND TO DEVELOP MATERIALS CONTAINING LESS CHROMIUM. ALTHOUGH PURE SILICIDE COATINGS SHOW VERY GOOD CORROSION RESISTANCE AT HIGH TEMPERATURES, THEY HAVE THE DISADVANTAGE THAT THEY ARE BRITTLE, HAVE A LOW MELTING POINT, AND DIFFUSION OF SILICON INTO THE SUBSTRATE MATERIAL CAN OCCUR WHEN EXPOSED TO HIGH TEMPERATURES. THEREFORE, THE SILICIDE COATINGS MUST BE MODIFIED WITH OTHER ELEMENTS SUCH AS TITANIUM AND ALUMINIUM FOR THESE EFFECTS TO BE AVOIDED. COATINGS CONTAINING MODIFIED SILICON WILL BE DEPOSITED ON IN738, NIM 90A, UDIMET 500-700-710-720, FSX414, IN939, S590, A 286, RA 333, HASTALOY X, 13% CR-STEEL AND CAST IRON. VARIOUS PROCESS PARAMETERS SUCH AS: TYPES OF MODIFYING ELEMENT (TI, AL), DEPOSITION METHOD AND MODIFYING ELEMENT LAYER THICKNESS, DIFFUSION HEAT TREATMENT, TEMPERATURE, TIME AND PACK COMPOSITION OF THE SILICONIZING PACK PROCESS AND HEAT TREATMENT FOLLOWING COATING, WILL ALL BE INVESTIGATED. IN ADDITION, A CHEMICAL OR MECHANICAL METHOD OF STRIPPING WILL BE DEVELOPED WHICH WILL NOT ATTACK THE BASE MATERIAL IN ORDER TO HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF REPAIRING THE COATED COMPONENT AT A LATER DATE. A NUMBER OF OXIDATION AND CORROSION TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT THE LABORATORY SCALE AND MECHANICAL TESTS WILL BE PERFORMED IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE THE INFLUENCE OF THE COATING ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SUBSTRATE MATERIAL. LATER ON, COATED PARTS WILL BE TESTED IN INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS. SEVERAL EUROPEAN INSTITUTES SUCH AS CERL (LEATHERHEAD, UK) AND MTU (MUENCHEN, FRG), WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE OXIDATION AND CORROSION TESTS AND OTHER PARTS OF THIS PROJECT.
