MECHANO-CHEMICAL CORROSION RESISTANCE OF ION IMPLANTED AND LASER BEAM IRRADIATED METALS AND ALLOYS.

Objectif

TO DEVELOP SUBSTITUTE METALS AND ALLOYS HAVING IMPROVED MECHANO-CHEMICAL CORROSION RESISTANCE BY THE SURFACE MODIFICATION TECHNIQUES OF ION IMPLANTATION AND ION MIXING.

IT IS INTENTED TO MAKE A FUNDAMENTAL STUDY ON THE ELECTROCHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR AND CORROSION RESISTANCE OF METALS AND ALLOYS SUBJECTED TO SURFACE MODIFICATIONS BY MEANS OF THE FOLLOWING DIFFERENT TYPES OF TREATMENTS:

- ION IMPLANTATION (USING ONE OR MORE ELEMENTS);
- ION MIXING;
- CHEMICAL AND ELECTRO-CHEMICAL DEPOSITION;
- LASER IRRADIATION.

THE METALS AND ALLOYS TO BE SUBJECTED TO SURFACE MODIFICATIONS AND DIFFERENT APPLIED TREATMENT WILL BE SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF POSSIBLE TECHNOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS OF INDUSTRIAL IMPORTANCE. THE AIM IS TO USE LESS EXPENSIVE MATERIALS, IN AGGRESSIVE MEDIA UNDER MECHANICAL STRESS AND EXPOSED TO A SURFACE NOBILITATION (BY USING ONE OF THE ABOVE-MENTIONED TECHNIQUES). THE OBJECTIVE IS TO FIND SUBSTITUTE MATERIALS FOR MORE EXPENSIVE AND RARE ELEMENTS.

THE CHEMICAL, STRUCTURAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE SURFACE WILL BE CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (SEM). ALL RELATED RESULTS WILL BE SUPPORTED BY EDAX MAPS. IN ADDITION, THE COMPOSITION OF THE SURFACE LAYERS WILL BE STUDIED BY MEANS OF ESCA AND AUGER TECHNIQUES, IN ADDITION TO NUCLEAR ANALYSIS AND MOESSBAUER SPECTROSCOPY.

ELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES USING STIMULUS-RESPONSE METHODS APPLIED TO THE METAL-ELECTROLYTE SYSTEM WILL BE USED FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE CORROSION BEHAVIOUR OF THE STUDIED MATERIAL. ON THE BASIS OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THESE TESTS, FURTHER MECHANO-CHEMICAL TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT.

THE UNIVERSITY OF PAUDA (ITALY) WILL COLLABORATE ON THIS PROJECT FOR THE LASER IRRADIATION STUDIES.
