DEVELOPMENT OF LACQUERED BLACK-PLATE COATINGS FOR FOOD AND TECHNICAL CONTAINERS, SAVING TIN CONSUMPTION.

Objectif

THE SUBSTITUTION AND CONSEQUENT IN THE CONSUMPTION OF TIN BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUITABLE LACQUERED BLACK-PLATE COATING FOR THE CANNING INDUSTRY.

THE MAIN PARTS OF THIS RESEARCH WILL CONSIST OF THE PREPARATION AND SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION OF BLACK-PLATE COATINGS FOLLOWED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUITABLE PROTECTIVE LACQUERS. THE PREPARATION PART WILL INCLUDE A STUDY ON THE DEGREASING, PICKLING AND PASSIVATING OF BLACKPLATE, BUT LIMITING THE EQUIVALENT CHROMIUM METAL VALUE PER PLATE FACE TO BETWEEN 5 AND 15 MG M-2. NEW PASSIVATION TECHNIQUES WILL ALSO BE EXPLORED. CHARACTERIZATION OF SURFACE WILL BE ACHIEVED BY: STUDIES WITH SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (SEM); DEPTH PROFILE ANALYSIS OF RESIDUALS FROM THE STEEL SURFACE WITH A GLOW DISCHARGE SPECTROMETER (GDS); ELECTROCHEMICAL MEASUREMENTS.

NORMAL AND FAST DRYING WILL BE STUDIED FOR SEVERAL TYOES OF LACQUERS ON BLACKPLATE AND DIFFERENT LACQUERING METHODS, SUCH AS OFFSET, SPRAY AND ELECTRODEPOSITION, WILL BE INVESTIGATED. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE LACQUERED BLACKPLATES WILL BE ASSESSED AS TO THEIR WET- AND- DRY- ADHESION, POROSITY, RESISTANCE TO PROCESSING AND CORROSION RESISTANCE TO VARIOUS FOODSTUFFS. ACCELERATED TESTS WILL ALSO BE CONDUCTED IN ACIDIC AND SULPHURIZING SOLUTIONS, AND ELECTRO-CHEMICAL EXAMINATIONS IN DIFFERENT CORROSIVE SOLUTIONS WILL BE MADE.

THIS PROGRAMME SHOULD LEAD TO THE FUTURE PRODUCTION AND MARKETING OF LACQUERED BLACKPLATE FOR THE CANNING INDUSTRY. WHILST USINOR IS THE MAIN CONTRACTOR, R & D SUPPORT FOR THIS PROJECT WILL BE GIVEN BY THE UNIVERSITY OF LILLE, GEORGET (NANTES) AND FEREMBEL (CLICHY), ALL IN FRANCE.
