COMPOSITE MATERIALS WITH LOW SILVER CONTENT AND MULTICOMPONENT FIBRES FOR ELECTRICAL CONTACTS.

REDUCTIONS IN THE SILVER CONTENT OF CONTACT MATERIALS, IN COMPARAISON WITH CONVENTIONAL ALLOYS, BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF FIBRE COMPOSITE MATERIALS WITH LOW SILVER CONTENT AND IMPROVED CONTACT PROPERTIES.

SILVER-BASED COMPOSITE MATERIALS LIKE AG/NI, AG/CDO, AG/SNO2, AG/C/ ARE COMMONLY USED AS CONTACT MATERIALS WITH LOW ARC EROSION AND/OR HIGH INTEGRITY AGAINST WELDING. THEY ARE CONVENTIONALLY FABRICATED BY POWDER METALLURGICAL WAYS; BY INTERNAL OXIDATION; OR OTHER SPECIAL METHODS. THE SILVER CONTENT USUALLY NEEDS TO BE MORE THAN 80 WT.%, IN THE CASE OF AG/NI, BECAUSE HEATING OF THE CONTACTS INCREASES WITH INCREASING NICKEL CONTENT. AN EVEN HIGHER SILVER CONTENT OF 95 WT.5 IS NECESSARY WITH AG/C BECAUSE OF THE INCREASING ARC EROSION WITH INCREASING GRAPHITE CONTENT. MOREOVER, DIFFICULTIES IN FABRICATION OFTEN SET A LIMIT TO THE AMOUNT OF ADDITIONS POSSIBLE.
THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF FIBRE COMPOSITE MATERIALS FOR APPLICATION TO ELECTRICAL CONTACTS WHICH HAVE LOW SILVER CONTENT AND EXHIBIT IMPROVED CONTACT PROPERTIES.THIS WILL BE DONE BY INCORPORATING MULTICOMPONENT FIBRES INTO THE SILVER MATRIX.THE FABRICATION METHOD WILL BE BY THE BUNDLING AND SIMULTANEOUS DEFORMATION OF MULTICOATED WIRES. THESE ARE MADE BY INSERTING A WIRE OF FIBRE MATERIAL 1 INTO A TUBE INSERTING THIS COATED WIRE INTO A TUBE OF SILVER AND DEFORMING ONCE AGAIN BY DRAWING. IN THE CASE OF FIBRES WITH NON-METALLIC COMPONENTS, TUBES OF FIBRE MATERIAL 1 ARE FILLED WITH POWDER OF FIBRE MATERIAL 2 AND DRAWN INTO WIRES WHICH ARE SUBSEQUENTLY INSERTED INTO SILVER TUBES AND TREATED AS ABOVE. AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD WILL BE BY FILLING SILVER TUBES WITH A POWDER MIXTURE OF FIBRE MATERIAL 1 AND 2. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING THE FOLLOWING MATERIAL COMBINATIONS:

AG/NI/CU (OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITIONS); AG/NI/CUZN; AG/NI/CUSN; AG/NI/CU/C; AG/CU/C (OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITIONS).

THE FIBRE MATERIALS, THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE FIBRES IN THE MATRIX AND THE ARRANGEMENT OF DIFFERENT COMPONENTS IN THE FIBRES WILL BE CHOSEN WITH REGARD TO SELF-PURIFICATION AND LOCALIZED OXIDATION OF THE CONTACT SURFACE. A REDUCTION OF THE SILVER CONTENT OF ABOUT 20 TO 505 SHOULD BE ACHIEVABLE.
ALL MATERIALS WILL BE EXAMINED METALLOGRAPHICALLY WITH REGARD TO THEIR RESISTANCE TO ARC EROSION, WELDING, CONTACT RESISTANCE, HEATING AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS WILL BE PROPOSED.
THE INSTITUT FUER WERKSTOFFTECHNIK, TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF BERLIN (FRG) WILL BE INVOLVED IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THIS PROJECT.
