WEAR RESISTANT PVD COATINGS ON HIGH-SPEED STEEL TOOLS.

Obiettivo

IMPROVEMENT OF PROPERTIES AND PERFORMANCE OF SPUTTER COATINGS ON HSS, COMBINING ADVANCED TECHNIQUES OF STRUCTURAL AND SURFACE ANALYSIS WITH VARIATIONS OF COATING SYSTEM AND PROCESS PARAMETERS.

THIS PROJECT HAS THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF DEVELOPING OPTIMIZED PVD COATINGS FOR HIGH-SPEED STEEL TOOLS. THESE WILL INCREASE TOOL LIFE AND IMPROVE PERFORMANCE ALLOWINGS HSS TOOLS PARTLY TO BE USED IN PLACE OF HARD METALS, AND THEREBY CONSERVE CRITICAL METALS SUCH AS W, MO, CO AND CR. IN CONTRAST TO MORE USUAL COATINGS, PVD SPUTTER COATINGS CAN BE APPLIED TO HSS TOOLS AFTER FINAL HEAT TREATMENT WITHOUT COMPROMISING PROPERTIES. THE SPUTTERING PROCESS WILL BE OPTIMIZED AND AN ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE AT IMPROVING THE PROPERTIES OF COATINGS AND OF THE COATING-SUBSTRATE SYSTEM. IN PARTICULAR, COATINGS BASED ON MULTICOMPONENT SYSTEMS LIKE TI-V-C-N AND GRADED OR MULTILAYER COATINGS (E.G. CARBIDE-NITRIDE-OXIDE) WILL BE STUDIED. THIS PHASE WILL ALSO INCLUDE EXPLORATORY STUDIES OF BORIDE AND DIAMOND-LIKE CARBON COATINGS WHICH HAVE RECENTLY BECOME KNOWN. TO PROVIDE A RATIONAL BASIS FOR PRODUCT AND PROCESS OPTIMIZATION, ADVANCED ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES LIKE HIGH RESOLUTION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY, HIGH RESOLUTION SCANNING AUGER SPECTROSCOPY, ESCA AND SMALL ANGLE X-RAY SCATTERING, AS WELL AS SPECIAL METHODS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF COATING-SUBSTRATE COHESION WILL BE COMBINED WITH VARIATIONS OF PROCESS PARAMETERS FOR THE MORE PROMISING COATING SYSTEMS.

PILOT SCALE TESTS WITH TIN COATINGS ON HSS TOOLS BY SPUTTER AND PVD DISPOSITION TECHNIQUES HAVE ALREADY BEEN SUCCESSFULLY CARRIED OUT AND THE EXPERIENCE GAINED WILL BE USEFULLY EMPLOYED IN THE PRESENT WORK.

THE MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FUER METALLFORSCHUNG (MPI) AT STUTTGART (FRG) WILL COLLABORATE IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THIS PROJECT.
