A STUDY OF THE FIRING OF DUST PRESSED CERAMIC TILES.

Cel

TO REDUCE CRACKING LOSSES IN THE FIRING OF DUST PRESSED CERAMIC TILES.

IN A FIRST STAGE THE POINT AT WHICH CRACKING OCCURS (CRACKING AFTER PRESSING, PRIOR TO FIRING AND DURING FIRING) AS WELL AS THE POSSIBLE INFLUENCE OF RAW MATERIALS ON CRACKING LOSSES WILL BE INVESTIGATED. THE PROPERTIES OF DIFFERENT CLAYS WILL BE DETERMINED, SUCH AS MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION, CHEMICAL ANALYSIS, IGNITION LOSS/MOISTURE ABSORPTION CHARACTERISTICS, DEFLOCCULATION CHARACTERISTICS, PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION, CRACKING TENDENCY OF COMPACTS FORMED FROM THE CLAY.

A COMPARISON OF BODIES WHICH GIVE LOW CRACKING LOSSES WITH BODIES KNOWN TO GIVE HIGH CRACKING LOSSES WILL BE MADE TO ESTABLISH WHETHER THE SPRAY DRIED GRANULATE PROPERTIES AND THE PROPERTIES OF THE PRESSED UNFIRED TILES BEAR ANY RELATION TO THE CRACKING TENDENCY.

IN A SECOND STAGE LABORATORY SYNTHESIS UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS WILL BE MADE. THIS INCLUDES RAW MATERIALS AND BODY PREPARATION AS WELL AS GRANULATE COMPACTION PROPERTIES. THEY WILL PROVIDE CLOSE CONTROL OF THE RAW MATERIALS AND PROCESSING CONDITIONS, AND WILL PERMIT THE ISOLATION OF THE VARIABLE TO ASSES THEIR RELATIVE IMPORTANCE.

IN A THIRD STAGE CONFIRMATION OF THE RESULTS IN FACTORY TRIALS WILL BE SOUGHT. THIS INVOLVES THE DEMOSTRATION OF REDUCTION OF CRACKING LOSSES IN CO-OPERATION WITH PARTICIPATING TILE MANUFACTURERS.

THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS PART OF A COMMON PROGRAMME THAT HAS BEEN DRAWN UP BY SEVERAL RESEARCH CENTRES IN THE COMMUNITY TO WORK ON A CERTAIN NUMBER OF RAW MATERIALS.
