UTITIZATION OF PYRITIC SHALE IN THE HEAVY CLAY INDUSTRY.

Objectif

TO ENABLE PYRITE AND PYRITE/CARBONATE-CONTAINING SHALES TO BE USED EFFECTIVELY IN THE PRODUCTION OF HIGH QUALITY HEAVY CLAYWARE.

IN THE FIRST PHASE, THE EFFECTS OF "WEATHERING" OF THE SHALE AND SHALE/CLAY MIXTURE, UNDER UNCONTROLLED CONDITIONS, WILL BE ASSESSED. THREE SAMPLES EACH, OF UNPROCESSED SHALE, PROCESSED SHALE, CLAY ASSOCIATED WITH THE SHALE AND A MIXTURE OF CLAY AND PROCESSED SHALE WILL BE SUBJECTED TO THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

- WEATHERING WITH PROGRAMMED WETTING AND CONTINUOUS RUN-OFF OF WATER;
- WEATHERING WITH RUN-OFF WATER CONTAINED;
- WEATHERING IN ATMOSPHERE WITHOUT WETTING.

THE SAMPLES WILL BE EXAMINED FOR THEIR PYRITE, CARBONATE AND SOLUBLE SALTS CONTENTS AND MINERALOGICAL TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT. SAMPLES WILL BE EXTRUDED, FIRED AND EXAMINED FOR THEIR SULPHUR DISTRIBUTION. IN ADDITION, SOME SOLUMN LEACHING WILL BE CARRIED OUT TO INVESTIGATE THE USE OF BACTERIAL ACTION AND PYRITIC BREAKDOWN.

IN THE SECOND AND FINAL PHASE, THE EFFECTIVENESS AND MODE OF REACTION OF CHEMICAL ADDITIVES IN THE CONTAINMENT OF SULPHIDE IN THE SHALE AND CLAY/SHALE MIX WILL BE EXAMINED; PARTICULARLY AT THE 'WEATHERING' STAGES BUT ALSO DURING THE PROCESSING AND FIRING STAGES. SOME EXPERIMENTS SHALL ALSO BE CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTVENESS AND ROLE OF AMMONIUM SALT ADDITIONS IN ASSISTING PYRITE DECOMPOSITION DURING FIRING. THE EFFECT OF BARIUM CARONATE ADDITION ON THE SOLUBLE SALT CONTENTS OF SHALE AND SHALE/CLAY MIXTURES, DURING THE COURSE OF WEATHERING WILL BE EXAMINED AND PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE SULPHIDE AND SOLUBLE SULPHATE LEVELS. FIRED SAMPLES WILL BE COMPAREDV WITH SAMPLES TO WHICH BARIUM CARBONATE WAS ADDED.
THE EFFECT OF AMMONIUM CHLORIDE (AND/OR AMMONIUM CARBONATE) ON PYRITE DECOMPOSITION DURING FIRING WILL BE INVESTIGATED. A SERIES OF FIRED PYRITIC SHALE SAMPLES CONTAINING KNOWN QUANTITIES OF AMMONIUM SALT WILL BE EXAMINED UNDER TEST CONDITIONS.

CHEMICAL ANALYSIS, X-RAY DIFFRACTION, SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND THERMAL ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES WILL BE APPLIED THROUGHOUT THE STUDY PROGRAMME.

PLANT FACILITIES AT SLANE PIPE AND CLAYWARE CO. LTD. (IRELAND) WILL BE USED AT VARIOUS STAGES OF THIS PROJECT.
