CHARACTERIZATION OF CLAYS BY THE CORRELATION OF PHYSICAL CHEMICAL PROPERTIES.

Objetivo

IMPROVEMENT OF THE QUALITY AND THE EFFICIENCY OF THE CERAMIC SHAPING PROCESS THROUGH CHARACTERIZATION OF CLAYS BY MEASUREMENT AND CORRELATION OF PHYSICAL CHEMICAL PROPERTIES.

THE STUDY OF HOW THE STRUCTURE OF CLAY AGGREGATES DEVELOPS DURING THE SHAPING SEQUENCE LEADS TO THREE PHASES OF RESEARCH:
1. STUDY OF THE 'STRUCTURE' OF CLAY SUSPENSIONS BY RHEOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS, SEDIMENTATION MEASUREMENTS AND MEASUREMENT OF POTENTIALS.
2. STUDY OF THE STRUCTURE OF CLAY IN THE PLASTIC STATE (AS PRODUCED BY FILTERING), BY MEASUREMENT OF FILTERING PROPERTIES, MEASUREMENT OF MOISTURE POTENTIAL (PF) (AT HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT).
3. STUDY OF THE RIGID CLAY DURING AND AFTER DRYING, BY MEASUREMENT OF MOISTURE POTENTIAL (PF) (AT LOW MOISTURE CONTENT), MEASUREMENT OF PERMEABILITY FOR GASES, MEASUREMENT OF PROPOSITY AND PARTICLE ORIENTATION.
IN PART 1 DRIVING FORCE FOR AGGLOMERATION AND STRUCTURE OF CLAY AGGLOMERATES IN SUSPENSION ARE STUDIED. THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE AGGLOMERATES IN SUSPENSION ARE STUDIED. THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE AGGLOMERATES DURING THE NEXT STEP OF THE FORMING (I.E. FILTERING) IS STUDIED IN PHASE 2 WHERE THE FLOW OF WATER, SHRINKS AND BECOMES RIGID. HERE TOO THE WATER RETENTION IS MEASURED, TOGETHER WITH THE PERMEABILITY AND RELATED PROPERTIES. THE STATEOF AGGLOMERATION OF THE CLAY DURING THE WHOLE PROCESS IS INFLUENCED BY SUCH PARAMETERS AS GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION, MINERALOGY AND COLLOID CHEMICAL CIRCUMSTANCES. THEREFORE THE THREE RESEARCH PHASES ARE STUDIED BY VARYING THE DEGREE OF AGGLOMERATION BY SLECTROLYTES, MECHANICAL AGITATION AND/OR CHANGES IN GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION.

IN CONNECTION WITH THE MEASUREMENTS OF THE FUNDAMENTAL DATA MENTIONED ABOVE, CLASSICAL CERAMIC PROPERTIES (STRENGTH, SHRINKAGE, MINERALOGY) WILL BE MEASURED. A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE RESEARCH WILL BE THE CORRELATION OF THE VARIOUS DATA AGAINST INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE. ONE OF THE GOALS IS INSIGTH, NOT MERE DATA.

THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS PART OF A COMMON PROGRAMME THAT HAS BEEN DRAWN UP BY SEVERAL WELL-EQUIPPED RESEARCH CENTRES IN THE COMMUNITY TO WORK ON A CERTAIN NUMBER OF RAW MATERIALS.
