IRON REMOVAL FROM COMPLEX ORE LEACH LIQUORS BY HYDROLYTIC STRIPPING

Obiettivo

INVESTIGATION OF APPLICABILITY OF THE HYDROLYTIC STRIPPING PROCESS FOR IRON REMOVAL AS HEMATITE FROM COMPLEX ORE LEACH LIQUORS AT THE SMALL PILOT PLANT SCALE.

THE PROBLEM OF THE REMOVAL OF IRON FROM LEACH LIQUORS AND ITS DISPOSAL IN AN ACCEPTABLE FORM IS A MAJOR OBSTACLE WHICH IS HINDERING THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANY POTENTIAL HYDROMETALLURGICAL PROCESSES FOR THE TREATMENT OF BASE METAL ORES.

A NEW METHOD FOR IRON REMOVAL, NAMED HYDROLYTIC STRIPPING, HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. IN THIS, IRON IS FIRST REMOVED FROM THE AQUEOUS LEACH LIQUOR BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION WHITH A CARBOXYLIC ACID.

THE IRON-LOADED ORGANIC PHASE IS THEN REACTED WITH WATER AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES (.(>130C) TO DIRECTLY PRECIPITATE HEMATITE FROM THE ORGANIC PHASE AND SIMULTANEOUSLY TO REGENERATE THE CARBOYLIC ACID FOR RECYCLE TO EXTRACTION.

THE HYDROLYTIC STRIPPING REACTION THUS PRECIPITATES AN UNCONTAMINED IRON OXIDE, WHICH SOULD BE ACCEPTABLE AS A FEED TO AN IRON-MAKING PROCESS, THEREFORE ELIMINATING DISPOSAL PROBLEMS.

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PRESENT PROJECT IS TO ENABLE THE PROCESS TO BE RUN ON A LARGER SCALE SO THAT SOME OF THE INDUSTRIALLY IMPORTANT FACTORS CAN BE INVESTIGATED, TOGETHER WITH ITS APPLICABILITY TO THE TREATMENT OF COMPLEX ORE LEACH LIQUORS. A SMALL SCALE SEMICONTINOUS PILOT PLANT WILL BE BUILT AND THE PROJECT WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN TWO PHASES :

IN THE FIRST PHASE, ATTENTION WILL BE FOCUSSED ON THE HYDROLYTIC STRIPPING PROCESS ITSELF. BATCHES OF IRON-LOADED ORGANIC PHASE WILL BE PREPARED BY THE MOST EXPERIMENTALLY CONVENIENT METHOD SO THAT BATCH PRECIPITATIONS IN A 15L AUTOCLAVE CAN BE CARRIED OUT. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PHASE OF THE WORK WILL BE TO DETERMINE OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS WHICH MINIMISE LOSSES OF ORGAMIC PHASE.

INTHE SECOND PHASE OF THE PROJECT, HYDROLYTIC STRIPPING WILL BE USED TO TREAT IRON-LOADED ORGANIC PHASES PRODUCED BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION FROM CHLORIDE-BASED COMPLEX ORE LEACH LIQUORS. OXIDATIVE EXTRACTION FROM CUPROUS/FERROUS CHLORIDE LEACH LIQUORS WILL BE USED TO PRODUCED BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION FROM CHLORIDE LEACH LIQUORS WILL BE USED TO PRODUCE THE IRON-LOADED ORGANIC SOLUTIONS FOR HYDROLYTIC STRIPPING. THIS PHASE OF THE WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ECOLE NATIONALE SUPERIEURE DES MINES DE PARIS, WHO IN A SEPARATE PROJECT WILL USE THEIR EXPERIENCE IN THREE-PHASE MIXING. USING THE TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED IN PARIS TO PRODUCE IRON-LOADED ORGANIC PHASES FROM REAL COMPLEX ORE LEACH LOQUORS WILL ENABLE THE BEHAVIOUR OF IMPURITIES TO BE STUDIED.
