THE DEVELOPMENT AND VERIFICATION OF MODELS TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF FLOTATION PLANTS.

THE APPROACHES TAKEN AIM TO DEVELOP A RANGE OF PROCESS MODELLING TECHNIQUES TO ASSIST IN THE DESIGN OF PRODUCTION-SCALE FLOTATION PLANT.

THIS IS A CO-OPERATIVE PROGRAMME BETWEEN BRGM, SAMIM/UNIVERSITY OF TRIESTE AND WARREN SPRING LABORATORY, WHERE EACH ORGANISATION SUBMITTED A SEPARATE PROPOSAL FOR THEIR SECTION OF THE OVERALL PROJECT PLAN, INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH TOPICS :

1. INVESTIGATION INTO THE SENSITIVITY OF FLOTAION PROCESSES.
2. TECHNIQUES TO CHARACTERISE THE ROUTE TO THE OPTIMUM REAGENT SELECTION.
3. MODELS AND TECHNIQUES REGARDING STUDIES OF OPERATIONAL PLANT PERFORMANCE.
4. PREDICTIVE MODELS AND MODELS LINKING FLOTATION TO GRINDING PROCESSES AND PLANT FLOWSHEET INVESTIGATION.
5. INVESTIGATION INTO THE ROLE OF PROCESSES OPERATING IN FLOTATION FROTHS.
6. INVESTIGATION OF LIBERATION IN RELATION TO FLOTATION CELL PERFORMANCE.
7. AN EXPANSION OF THE USE OF MATERIAL BALANCES IN PLANT STUDIES.

WARREN SPRING LABORATORY'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE OVERALL PROJECT

A RANGE OF RELATIVELY SIMPLE MODELS OF OPERATIONAL FLOTATION PLANTS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AT WLS. THIS PROJECT DESCRIBES METHODS ENABLING BETTER ESTIMATES OF THE VECTOR ENTRIES TO BE ACHIEVED FROM LABORATORY SCALE TESWORK ON ORE SAMPLES AND CORRELATIONS WITH OTHER SIMILAR FLOTATION PROCESSES.

A) FROTH FACTORS WILL BE INVESTIGATED IN RELATION TO PROCESS MODELLING. THE STRUCTURE OF FLOTATION FROTHS FOR A RANFE OF ORE TYPES AND FLOTATION STAGES WILL BE INVESTIGATED AND CHARACTERISED IN RESPECT OF FROTH DRAINAGE EFFECTS, CELL AIRFLOWRATE AND MOBILITY, BOTH AT LABORATORY SCALE AND ON OPERATIONAL PLANTS.

B) IN THE MAJORITY OF FLOTATION PROCESSES NOT SUFFICIENTLY LIBERATED MATERIAL HAS TO BE REGROUND. THE MODEL STRUCTURE OF THE FLOWSHEET WILL BE MODIFIED TO INCLUDE THE REGRINDING OF PROCESS STREAMS AND SUBSEQUENT RETURN OF MATER RIAL TO THE FLOTATION PROCESS.

C) IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE SEPARATION BY FLOTATION AND THE ORE COMMINUTION PROCESSES AND ALSO SUBSEQUENT THICKENING, DRYING AND TAILINGS DISPOSAL. THE ROLE OF FLOTATION MODELS AS UNIT STEPS IN THE OVERALL MODEL WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

D) MATERIAL BALANCES ARE REQUIRED TO CHARACTERIES PLANT PERFORMANCE FROM THE DATA COLLECTED DURING SAMPLING CAMPAIGNS AROUND OPERATIONAL PLANTS.
IT IS NECESSARY TO INVESTIGATE THE COLLECTION OF DATA AND THE SUBSEQUENT USE OF MATERIAL BALANCE PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE ICTURES OF PROCESS FUNCTIONS; PARTICULARLY REGARDING COST EFFECTIVENESS IN THIS FIELD.
