RECOVERY OF VALUABLE METALS FROM THE TI02 PRODUCTION PROCESS

Objetivo



TO IDENTIFY ECONOMIC AND CHEMICAL FEASIBLE PROCESSES FOR TREATMENT OF TI02 CHLORIDE PROCESS EFLUENT AND RECOVERY OF VALUABLE ELEMENTS AND PROCESS MATERIALS (NB, ZI, V, AL).

1. REVIEW OFMAJOR CONSTITUENT CHEMICALS TO BE FOUND IN SPRAY VESSEL DISCHARGE (SVD).

2. DEVISE POSSIBLE PROCESSES FOR SEPARATING THE VALUABLE ELEMENTS.
IN THE FIRST INSTANCE LIKELY PROCESSES INCLUDE :

A) CHLORINATION AND FRACTIONATION

B) FUSION AND AQUEOUS EXTRACTION

C) SOLVENT EXTRACTION

D) TECHNIQUES SUGGESTED BY ANALYTICAL EXPERTISE.

3. CONDUCT LABORATORY RESEARCH TO DEDUCE MOST SUITABLE TREATMENT PROCESSES.

4. IDENTIFY PREFERRED PROCESS(ES) FOR CHEMICAL AND ECONOMIC VIABILITY AND ESTABLISH PARAMETERS FOR PILOT PLANT OPERATION.

5. DESIGN, CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE ^E~100 KG PER DAY PILOT PLANT TO ESTABLISH DESIGN PARAMETERS AND EFFICIENCIES FOR FULL SCALE OPERATION. THE PROCESS WOULD BE CAPABLE OF RECOVERING SEVERAL HUNDRED TONNES PER ANNUM OF VANADIUM, ZIRCONIUM AND RATHER LARGER TONNAGES OF ALUMINIUM. PRECISE TONNAGES WILL DEPEND ON FEEDSTOCK AND SEPARATION PROCESS.

CONCLUSION

THIS RESEARCH SHOULD LEAD TO PROVISION OF SIGNIFICANT QUANTITIES OF STRATEGIC HIGH VALUE MATERIALS CURRENTLY OBTAINED FROM OUTSIDE THE EEC, AND AT THE SAME TIME IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT BY REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF EFFLUENT. ALUMINIUM CAN BE RECYCLED WITHIN THE CHLORIDE PROCESS, THEREBY REDUCING THE DEMAND FOR ANOTHER STRATEGIC MATERIAL.

THE TIOXIDE GROUP CURRENTLY OPERATE MAJOR PRODUCTION PLANTS IN THE U.K. (2), FRANCE (1) AND SPAIN (1). THE TECHNIQUES IDENTIFIED BY THIS RESEARCH WILL PROBABLY OFFER THE PROSPECT OF APPLICATION TO OTHER COMPLEX STAGES AND PROCESS RESIDUES.
