Objectif TO STUDY NOVEL ROUTES FOR THE BENEFICIATION OF ILMENITIC ORES THE OBJECTIVE IS TO PROVIDE AN ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTALLY DESIRABLE PROCESS FOR PRODUCING AN UPGRADED ILEMENITE FORUSE IN THE CHLORIDE ROUTE TO TI02 PIGMENT PRODUCTION, THEREBY ACHIEVING : 1. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS IN TI02 PIGMENT PRODUCTION 2. ECONOMIC BENEFITS IN THE CHLORIDE PROCESS 3. MINIMUM LOSS OF ORE CONSTITUENTS 4. ECONOMIC USE OF PROCESS MATERIALS AND ENERGY 5. REDUCTION OF EEC DEPENDENCE ON IMPORTED HIGH TI02 FEEDSTOCKS. WORKING PLAN : 1. DESK STUDY OF THERMODYNAMICAL DATA AND CHEMICAL THEORY 2. LABORATORY SCALE EXPERIMENTS TO CHECK EQUILIBIRA AND DEFINE KINETICS 3. IDENTIFICATION OF REAGENTS BENEFICIAL FOR KINETICS AND PRODUCT FORM 4. LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT OF PREFERRED PROCESS TO EXTABLISH CHEMICAL EFFICIENCY, ECONOMIC VIABILITY AND POTENTIAL MATERIALS OF RECONSTRUCTION 5. REVIEW PROGRESS WITH A VIEW TO SCALE UP TO 1/2 - 1 TONE PER DAY 6. IF REVIEW FAVOURABLE, DESIGN, CONSTRUCT AND OPERATE PILOT PLANT 7. MONITOR PROGRESS TO ASSESS NOVELTY FOR PATENT APPLICATIONS. PRELIMINARY DESK STUDIES HAVE INDICATED THAT REDUCTION OF ILMENITE TO FORM TITANIUM CARBIDE AND FE METAL PROVIDES A STARTING MATERIAL FOR THE FOLLOWING APPROACHES : 1. PREFERENTIAL CHLORINATION OF THE TITANIUM VALUES 2. PHYSICAL SEPARATION OF THE TITANIUM VALUES AND METALLIC IRON 3. SELECTIVE REMOVAL OF THE METALLIC IRON AS THE CARBONYL OTHER ROUTES ARE WORTHY OF CONSIDERATION, E.G. SULPHIDING, FLUORIDING. THE MAJORITY OF THE WORK WILL BE CONTROLLED BY TIOXIDE INTERNATIONAL. LIAISON WITH IMPERIAL COLLEGE WILL BE MAINTAINED AT ALL STAGES, MOST SPECIFICALLY FOR THE REDUCTION OPERATION. THE RESEACH SHOULD LEAT TO DEFINITION OF A PROCESS CAPABLE OF PROVIDING THE U.K. AND EEC WITH A STRATEGIC SUPPLY OF TITANIUM FEEDSTOCK BASED ON IMPORTED OR POSSIBLY INDIGENOUS, ILMENITE ORES, ELIMINATING THE WASTEFUL DIRECT CHLORINATION OF ILMENITE.
