SEDIMENT PETROGRAPHY OF LOWER CARBONIFEROUS SEDIMENTS IN THE NAVAN AREA (IRELAND) AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO LITHOGEOCHEMISTRY AND BASE METAL MINERALISATIONS.

TO OBTAINE A BETTER EVALUATION AND INTERPRETATION OF LITHOGEOCHEMICAL PATTERNS AND TO FIND RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEDIMENPETROGRAPHICAL FEATURES AND MINERALISATIONS IN CARBONATE SEDIMENTS.

THE SEDIMENTPETROGRAPHY OF THE TOURNAISIAN CARBONATE SUCCESSION, HOST OF SEVERAL DEPOSITS AND MINERALISATIONS OF THE NAVAN AREA (IRELAND) WILL BE INVESTIGATED. PARALLEL TO THIS STUDY, THE LITHOGEOCHEMISTRY WILL BE DETERMINED BY IRISH BASE METALS LDT.*.

THE AIMS OF THE RESEARCH ARE

- TO OBTAINE A BETTER EVALUATION AND INTERPRETATION OF LITHOGEOCHEMICAL DATA

- TO ESTABLISH RELATIONS BETWEEN THE GEOCHEMICAL DISTRIBUTION, FACIES, MINERALOGY AND MINERALISATIONS

- TO ASSIST IN STRATIGRAPHICAL CORRELATIONS AND PALEOGEOGRAPHICAL RECONSTRUCTIONS

- TO ASSIST IN STRATIGRAPHICAL CORRELATIONS AND PALEOGEOGRAPHICAL RECONSTRUCTIONS

- TO DELINEATE CONTROLLING FACTORS OF ORE DEPOSITION WHICH COULD ALSO SERVE AS A BASIS FOR PROSPECTION ELSEWHERE.

THE RESEARCH WILL BE APPLIED ON DRILL CORE SAMPLES BETWEEN SLANE AND CLONABREANY, COVERING AN AREA OF ~ 5 X 35 KM.

IT WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:

1) SEDIMENTPETROGRAPHICAL FEATURES.
FROM THE RESULTS THE DIFFERENT FACIES WILL BE DERIVED AND THE STRATIGRAPHY AND PALEOGEOGRAPHY REFINED. ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE OCCURENCE OF SMALL ORDER BASINS AND THE RELATION WITH MINERALISATION. ALSO THE RELATIONS WITH THE GEOCHEMICAL DISTRIBUTION AND THE EXTENT OF FACIES INFLUENCE WILL BE EVALUATED.

2) MINERALISATIONS AND TRACE MINERALISATIONS, ANALYSES OF INSOLIBLE RESIDUES.
THE AIMS HERE ARE: THE DETERMINATION WILL BE PAID TO THE OCCURRENCE OF SMALL ORDER BASINS AND THE RELATION WITH MINERALISATION. ALSO THE RELATIONS WITH THE GEOCHEMICAL DISTRIBUTION AND THE EXTENT OF FACIES INFLUENCE WILL BE EVALUATED.OF THE DEGREE OF INFLUENCE OF TRACE MINERALISATION AND INSOLUBLE RESIDUES ON THE GEOCHEMICAL PATTERN, AND THE DELINEATION OF INTERESTING AREAS (OF SMALLER EXTENT THAN THE LITHOGEOCHEMICAL PATTERN) IN A FERTILE BASIN.

3) CLAY MINERALOGY AND IN PARTICULAR THE ILLITE CRYSTALLINITY.
THE AIM IS TO DELINEATE AREAS OF SPECIFIC SEDIMENTARY ENVIRONMENTS, OF "HIGHER" DIAGENETIC EFFECTS AND/OR OF ALTERATION EFFECTS.
