IMPROVING THE WOOD DRYING PROCESS

Ziel

THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO COMPARE LESS FAMILIAR DRYING SYSTEMS, SUCH AS CLIMATE CHAMBERS, DEHUMIDIFIERS AND VACUUM KILNS, WITH TRADITIONAL HEAT AND VENT KILNS.

THIS DATA SHEET COVERS THE TRADA) (UK) CONTRIBUTION TO A JOINT PROJECT WITH TNO (NL) AND TEKNOLOGISK INSTITUT (DK).

A BASIS FOR THESE COMPARATIVE STUDIES HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WHEREBY EACH OF THE DRYING TECHNIQUES WILL BE ASSESSED FOR THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS.FIRSTLY KILN EFFICIENCY, BASED ON THE RATIO OF TOTAL LATENT HEAT PRESENT IN THE MOISTURE REMOVED TO TOTAL ENERGY SUPPLIED TO THE KILN. SECONDLY, ON THE BASIS OF THE COST OF EACH DRYING TECHNIQUE TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ENERGY, CAPITAL, LABOUR, MAINTENANCE AND RAW MATERIAL COSTS OFFSET AGAINST INCOME FROM THE DRIED PRODUCT AND WASTE MATERIAL. WHILST COST IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR, THE DEGREE OF DEGRADE AS A RESULT OF A PARTICULAR DRYING SYSTEM MUST ACCOMPANY ANY ASSESSMENT OF KILN PERFORMANCE.

THE FINAL SECTION IS CONCERNED WITH THE SPECIFICATIONS, ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF EACH OF THE DRYING TECHNIQUES. AN IN-DEPTH SURVEY HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON DEHUMIDIFICATION DRYING SEVARAL DIFFERENT DEHUMIDIFICATION SYSTEMS ARE IDENTIFIED AND SPLIT INTO THREE CATEGORIES, BASED ON MAXIMUM OPERATING TEMPERATURE. EACH OF THESE CATEGORIES (LOW, MEDIUM AND HIGH TEMPERATURE) IS DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO DESIGN AND CAPABILITY.

A HIGHLY VERSATILE, WELL INSULATED KILN (RECENTLY INSTALLED AT TRADA IS DESCRIBED AND ITS POTENTIAL FOR ACCURATE, MEANINGFULL ENERGY COMPARISONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT DRYING SYSTEMS IS BRIEFLY DISCUSSED.
