MONOMERS FROM LIGNIN AND HEMICELLULOSES, THEIR POLYMERISATION AND STUDY OF MATERIALS THERE OF

Objective



TO ARRIVE AT HIGH PERFORMANCE MACROMOLECULAR MATERIALS WITH PHENOLIC AND BURANIC MONOMERS PREPARED BY NEW SYNTHETICS ROUTES FROM WOOD OR AGRICULTURAL WASTES, OR PAPER PULPING BYPRODUCTS.

IN ORDER TO COVER ADEQUATELY THE WIDE SPECTRUM OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES INVOLVED, THREE INSTITUTIONS WHOSE FUNCTIONS ARE COMPLEMENTARY ARE COLLABORATING: L'ECOLE NATIONALE SUPERIEURE DE CHIMIE, TOULOUSE, FRANCE;L'ECOLE FRANCAISE DE PAPETERIE, SAINT-MARTIN D'HERES, FRANCE;AND CSTB.

THE WORK WILL START FROM PHENOLIC AND FURANIC ALDEHYDES RESPECTIVELY OBTAINED BY WELL-KNOWN INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES FROM LIGNIN AND HEMICELLULOSES OF DIFFERENT SOURCES: WOOD RESIDUES, AGRICULTURAL WASTES, CHEMICAL PULPIN,ETC. THE FIRST PHASE WILL CONSIST IN ARRIVING AT OPTIMAL TRANSFORMATIONS OF THESE ALDEHYDES, OR SOME OF THEIR DERIVATIVES, INTO ETHYLENIC COMPOUNDS THROUGH THE PERFECTING OF NOVEL SYNTHETIC ROUTES CHARACTERISED BY LOW COSTS, SIMPLICITY AND HIGH YIELDS. IT IS THE TASK TAKEN UP BY THE ENSCT. IN THE SECOND PHASE, PERTAINING TO THE EFP, THE ETHYLENIC COMPOUNDS OF BOTH THE PHENOLIC AND FURANIC SERIES WILL BE TESTED AS POTENTIAL MONOMERS OR COMONOMERS IN VARIOUS TYPES OF POLYMERISATION SYSTEMS COVERING A BROAD RANGE OF TECHNIQUES AND CATALYSES IN ORDER TO REACH A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A GIVEN ETHYLENIC STRUCTURE AND THE MOST ADEQUATE METHOD OF ACTIVATION LEADING TO A MACROMOLECULAR PRODUCT. THE FULL CHARACTERISATION OF THESE POLYMERS AS WELL AS THE STUDY OF THEIR CHEMICAL MODIFICATION IN ORDER TO IMPROVE ONE OR SEVERAL OF THEIR PROPERTIES WILL ALSO BE CARRIED OUT AT THE EFP. THE FINAL PHASE WILL BE CONDUCTED AT THE CSTB AND CONSISTS OF THE TESTING OF THOSE POLYMERS, COPOLYMERS OR BLENDS (COMPOSITES) WHICH HAVE APPEARED MOST PROMISING. MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, THERMAL PROPERTIES AS WELL AS FIRE RESISTANCE AND WEATHERABILITY WILL BE CLOSELY INSPECTED IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THE POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS OF EACH MATERIAL. THE INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT OF ANY OF THESE NEW PRODUCTS WILL BE ENVISAGED AS A FOLLOW-UP STUDY.
