BEHAVIOUR OF WOOD UNDER LONG TERM LOADING

Objetivo



THIS RESEARCH WILL BE PERFORMED IN COLLABORATION WITH TECHNOLOGISK INSTITUT (DENMARK), TECHNISCHE HOGESCHOOL DELFT(NETHERLANDS) AND TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITAET MUENCHEN(FRG).

THREE ASPECTS OF CREEP AND DRYING STRESSES IN WOOD WILL BE INVESTIGATED IN RELATION TO VARIOUS PARAMETERS TO DEVELOP BETTER THEORETICAL UNDERSTANDING AND DERIVE IMPROVED DESIGN FACTORS :

1. CREEP AS FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE BETWEEN 30_ AND 90 C AT 125 MOISTURE CONTENT, USING A UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE IN A CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE.

2. DEFORMATION DUE TO DRYING STRESSES ARISING FROM LONGITUDINAL SHRINKAGE, MEASURED ON SMALL SECTIONS TO DETERMINE INSTANTANEOUS AND RESIDUAL STRAINS.

3. THE INFLUENCE OF LOCAL SHEAR DEFORMATION DURING THE LONG-TERM LOADING IN BENDING OF COMMERCIAL SIZE BEAMS, ESPECIALLY NEAR THE SUPPORTS.

THE RESULTS WILL BE APPLIED TO THE MODELLING OF THE MOLECULAR AND MACROSCOPIC CREEP MECHANISMS IN RELATION TO THE ACTIVATION ENERGY, THE DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS FOR THE CONTROL OF DRYING STRESSES AND OF IMPROVED DRYING PROCEDURES, AND TO THE DERIVATION OF DESIGN PROCEDURES FOR LOAD-BEARING TIMBER STRUCTURES. THE WORK IS CARRIED OUT IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH OTHER LABORATORIES OF THE COMMUNITY INTERESTED IN RELATED SUBJECTS.
