Cel POPLAR CLONES, USED FOR LANDSCAPE PLANTATIONS IN DIFFERENT EUROPEAN AREAS, HAVE ALSO A WIDE RANGE OF INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS, E.G. MATCHES, PANELS, MASS PRODUCTIONS ETC... MOREOVER, NEW RECENTLY SELECTED CLONES OF ASH AND WILD CHERRY WILL TAKE PLACE IN BIOLOGICALLY FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. BACTERIAL CANKER CAUSED BY XANTHOMONAS POPULI IS POTENTIALLY ONE OF THE MOST SERIOUS DISEASES OF POPLAR (GROWTH REDUCTION, DISTURBANCE OF TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES). THE SAME SITUATION EXISTS FOR ASH BACTERIAL CANKER IN CERTAIN PARTS OF WESTERN EUROPEAN FORESTS; IT IS INDUCED BY PSEUDOMONAS SAVASTANOI F. SP. FRAXINI. MOREOVER, CROWN-GALL CAUSED BY AGROBACTERIUM TUMEFACIENS IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE IMPORTANT IN NURSERIES,PARTICULARLY ON NEW CLONES OF POPLAR ("LEUCE" SECTION) AND WILD CHERRY. RESEARCH CONCERNING RESISTANCE TO BACTERIAL DISEASES OF MENTIONED TREES AND THEIR BIOLOGICAL CONTROL IS CARRIED OUT IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES OF THE COMMUNITY, AND IN PARTICULAR ON: 1. BACTERIAL CANKER OF POPLAR IT IS NECESSARY TO MINIMIZE THE RISKS OF POPLAR CLONES WITH AN INSUFFICIENT RESISTANCE TO BACTERIAL CANKER BEING RELEASED IN E.C. 1.1 RESEARCH EXTENSION CONCERNING RESISTANCE CHARACTER : . ON TRICHOCARPA AND DELTOIDES PROVENANCES. . ON THE PROGENIES OF VARIOUS EUROPEAN PROGRAMMES OF BREEDING FOR RESISTANCE, .
