Cel THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DENSITY OF WOOD IN THE KNOT AREA TO ITS DENSITY IN THE KNOT-FREE AREA IS AN IMPORTANT CRITERION IN MACHINE GRADING PROCESSES IN WHICH THE WOOD DENSITY IS REQUIRED. AN EXACT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS RELATIONSHIP IS NECESSARY TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY OF SUCH GRADING PROCESSES. A BETTER KNOWLEDGE OF THE WOOD STRENGTH LEADS AS WELL TO MORE ECONOMICAL MATERIAL USE. THE PRESENT STATE OF KNOWLEDGE IS INSUFFICIENT. THE RESEARCH CONCERNS ITSELF WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SOUND BASIS FOR THE CALCULATION OF CLASSIFICATION BOUNDARIES IN THE DENSITY-RELATED MACHINE GRADING PROCESS. BY INCLUDING GREEN WOODS IN THE INVESTIGATION THE POSSIBILITY OF GRADING FRESH-SAWN TIMBER COULD BE DETERMINED AS WELL. FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING THE VARIATION IN SPECIFIC GRAVITY, SPECIMENS OF SPRUCE WOOD PERPENDICULAR TO THE GRAIN WILL BE SAWN INTO SLICES. THROUGH MEASUREMENT OF THE WEIGHT AND VOLUME, THE DENSITY CAN BE CALCULATED FOR EACH SLICE, AND A COMPARISON OF THESE DENSITIES TO THE DENSITY OF KNOT-FREE SPRUCE CAN BE MADE. THE INFLUENCE OF VARYING MOISTURE CONTENT COULD BE ESTABLISHED AT SEVERAL LEVELS, FROM FRESH SAWN CONDITION TO A MOISTURE CONTENT OF M.C. = 10 % +- 2 %. STATISTICAL METHODS DETERMINE THE SAMPLE SELECTION, WHEREBY THE INFLUENCE OF GROWTH ENVIRONMENT VARIANCES FOR SPRUCE IN CENTRAL EUROPE IS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. GROUPS OF SAMPLES HAVING LIKE KNOT CONFIGURATIONS (SPIKE KNOT, SINGLE KNOT, CLUSTER KNOT, ETC.) ARE FORMED. DENSITIES FOR SPECIMENS OF VARIOUS CUTS (POSTS, BOARDS, ETC.), CROSS SECTIONAL AREAS, AND KNOT SIZES CAN THEN BE COMPILED. WITH THE RESULTS RECEIVED, TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN A GLULAM MANUFACTURING PLANT HAVING A RADIOMETRIC MACHINE GRADING SYSTEM. THE AIM IS TO ADJUST THE MACHINE SETTINGS AND TO CLARIFY THE POSSIBILITY OF A NEW STRENGTH CLASS OF HIGHER QUALITY THAN PRESENTLY ACCOUNTED FOR IN CLASS 1.
