Objetivo IN CONVENTIONAL CHEMICAL CONVERSION OF WOOD, THE UTILIZATION OF THE RAW MATERIAL IS RATHER SELECTIVE. CELLULOSE IS THE ONLY WOOD COMPONENT THAT IS CONVERTED TO PULP AND PAPER OR TO CHEMICAL PRODUCTS ON AN INDUSTRIAL SCALE AT PRESENT. SEPARATION OF THE COMPONENTS BY A MILD TREATMENT SEEMS TO BE THE BEST WAY TO MAKE BETTER USE OF THE MATERIAL. STEAM-PRETREATMENT IS ONLY FEASIBLE FOR HARDWOODS AND ANNUAL PLANTS, WHEREAS ORGANOSOLV PROCESSES CAN ALSO BE USED FOR SOFTWOODS. IN ADDITION ORGANOSOLV SYSTEMS ACCOMPLISH A COMPLETE SEPARATION OF LIGNOCELLULOSES IN CELLULOSE, HEMICELLULOSES AND LIGNIN, WHEREAS IN STEAMING-PROCESSES A TOTAL SEPARATION OF THE LIGNIN IS NOT ACHIEVABLE. THE ORGANOSOLV METHOD IS BASED ON SIMULTANEOUS HYDROLYSIS AND EXTRACTION OF THE LIGNIN. WHEN WATER IS ADDED TO THE SYSTEM, THE HEMICELLULOSES ARE ALSO DISSOLVED. PRACTICAL WORK WITH LOW BOILING ALCOHOLS HAS REVEALED SOME DIFFICULTIES,INCLUDING DANGER OF FIRE, LOSSES OF THE ORGANIC SOLVENT BECAUSE OF VOLATILITY, AND HIGHER PRESSURES THAN USUAL IN THE PULPING INDUSTRY. WHEN ORGANOSOLV SYSTEMS WITH HIGH BOILING ALCOHOLS ARE USED, DANGER OF FIRE AND VOLATILITY ARE DRASTICALLY REDUCED: THE PRESSURES IN THE SYSTEM CORRESPOND TO THE PARTIAL PRESSURE OF WATER AT THE NECESSARY TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 170 DEGREES AND 200 DEGREES. THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO EVALUATE A METHOD FOR COMPARISON OF THE PULPING EFFICIENCIES OF DIFFERENT MONOHYDROXY AND POLYHYDROXY ALCOHOLS. TWO SYSTEMS WITH THE BEST RESULTS WILL BE OPTIMIZED FURTHER WITH REGARD TO THE PULPING CONDITIONS. THE RESULTING PRODUCTS, CELLULOSE, HEMICELLULOSES AND LIGNIN, WILL BE CHARACTERIZED BY CHEMICAL ANALYSIS. THE RESEARCH INCLUDES AN UP-SCALING OF THE PROCESS IN 1L- AND 10 L-AUTOCLAVES USING EXISTING EQUIPMENT, AND AN EVALUATION OF THE PRODUCTS WITH REGARD TO PRACTICAL APPLICABILITY. THE CELLULOSE WILL BE TESTED AS A SUBSTRATE FOR ENZYMATIC SACCHARIFICATION AND AS A STARTING MATERIAL FOR ETHERIFICATION AND ESTERIFICATION. THE HEMICELLULOSES WILL BE TESTED AS A REACTIVE EXTENDER IN DUROPLASTIC ADHESIVES. FIRST RESULTS INDICATE THAT LIGNIN CAN BE USED AS BASIS MATERIAL FOR PHENOLIC RESINS AND FOAMS. THESE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE CONTINUED, USING DTA-TECHNIQUES.
