FRACTURED ROCK MECHANICS AND THE STRUCTURAL STABILITY OF MINES.

Objectif

THE OVERALL AIM OF THE RESEARCH IS TO DEVISE A NEW METHODOLOGY TO STUDY THE CONDITIONS OF STABILITY OF MINE WORKINGS IN JOINTED ROCK MASSES.
The purpose of this research was the evaluation and development of specific methods of analysis of stability conditions in fractured rock masses surrounding mine workings. Modelling methods for jointed rock masses, either affected by natural fracturation, or by mining induced fracturation were also studied. The research has been carried on in the following directions: achievement of a complete critical bibliographic inquiry and analysis of existing methods (softwares) dealing with block modelling), development of specific tools suited for the purposes of this research and improvement of existing methods, field and laboratory experimentations for collecting data useful for modelling and for model validation and the application of the previous methodology to industrial sites. The research allowed a significant step for the study of fractured rock masses in the mining industry. Main modelling methods have been investigated, evaluated, and after conceptual choices, efficient software has been developed. Problems of geometrical and geomechanical data collection has been clearly identified and an appropriate methodology has been elaborated and tested.
THE MAIN STEPS OF THE RESEARCH WOULD BE THE FOLLOWING:
1. DEVELOPMENT OF A SOFTWARE ENABLING A 3D GRAPHIC DISPLAY OF THE ROCK MASS REGARDED AS A SET OF BLOCKS LIMITED BY JOINTS EITHER OBSERVED IN SITU OR SIMULATED AS A CONSEQUENCE OF BOTH TECTONIC HISTORY OF THE SITE AND MINING OPERATIONS.
2. DEVELOPMENT OF SOFTWARES ENABLING THE NUMERICAL MODELLING OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF THIS SET OF BLOCKS AND THE ASSESSMENT OF ITS STABILITY: THIS MODELLING COULD BE A COMBINATION OF KINEMATICS ELEMENTS METHODS AND KEY BLOCK METHODS.
3. CALIBRATION OF THE METHOD ON A LIMITED NUMBER OF ACTUAL, WELL ANALYZED CASES.

THE BENEFITS EXPECTED FROM THIS RESEARCH ARE THE FOLLOWING :
- SUPPLY OF FACILITIES FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF THE FRACTURATION AND THE ANALYSIS OF ITS CONSEQUENCES ON THE STABILITY OF MINE WORKINGS;
- IMPROVEMENT OF THE DEFINITION OF GEOMETRY AND SIZE OF WORKINGS AND PANELS;
- IMPROVEMENT OF THE DESIGN OF ROOF SUPPORT SYSTEMS WHICH COULD REDUCE THE MINING COSTS;
