DEVELOPMENT OF A FURNACE BURNING WASTE OIL AND RDF WITH PCB EMISSIONS CONTROL

TO DEVELOP A DEVICE ABLE TO BURN WASTE OIL OR RDF WITHOUT DIOXIN EMISSIONS

PCDDS AND PCDFS MAY EASILY BE DESTROYED BY PYROLYSIS IN THE PRESENCE OF HYDROGEN, EVEN AT TEMPERATURES LOWER THAN 850 CELSIUS DEGREES. THE DEVICE TO DEVELOP IS A DUAL CELL FLUIDIZED BED PYROLYSER-BURNER WORKING ON THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLE:
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PYROLYSER (POSSIBLY A DRAUGHT TUBE), HOT STEAM IS INJECTED. THE STEAM REACTS WITH IRON-CONTAINING PARTICLES SPREAD IN THE BED, FOLLOWING THE REACTION: FE + H2O - FEO + H2
THE FUEL (WASTE OIL OR RDF) IS INJECTED IN THAT CELL.
THE PCBS, PCDDS AND PCDFS RELEASED DURING PYROLYSIS OF THE FUEL REACT WITH THE HYDROGEN. THE DECONTAMINATED VAPOURS FORMED ESCAPE AT THE TOP OF THE BED AND BURN IN CONTACT WITH THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTED ABOVE THE FB REACTOR. IN THE OTHER CELL (OUTSIDE OF THE DRAUGHT TUBE), PRIMARY AIR IS INTRODUCED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BED IN SUBSTOECHIOMETRIC AMOUNT, IN ORDER TO ALLOW PARTIAL COMBUSTION OF THE PYROLYSED FUEL, FORMING BY THIS WAY CARBON MONOXIDE. THE IRON, OXIDIZED IN THE FIRST CELL (INSIDE OF THE DRAUGHT TUBE) IS REGENERATED FOLLOWING THE REACTION: FEO + CO - FE + CO2.

THE COMBUSTION IS THEN COMPLETED ABOVE THE TOP OF THE BED, WHERE SECONDARY AIR IS INJECTED. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS FURNACE WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THREE PHASES:

.- FIRST PHASE: LAB SCALE TESTS:
-MIXING OF PARTICLES IN FB
-KINETICS OF REACTIONS

.- SECOND PHASE: FURNACE DESIGNS AND ERECTION (INCLUDING HEAT EXCHANGER AND SAFETY DEVICE)

.- THIRD PHASE: BURNING TESTS AND ANALYSIS
-THESE TESTS WILL PERMIT TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS FACTORS: TEMPERATURE, HEIGHT OF BED, GAS VELOCITIES, SOLID CIRCULATION RATE, TYPE AND SIZE OF THE OIL INJECTOR.
AN ADAPTATION OF A NEW SAMPLING METHOD TO ANALYSE DIOXIN WILL ALSO BE CARRIED OUT.

.- FOURTH PHASE: TECHNICO-ECONOMICAL EVALUATION.
