NUTRITIONAL LABELLING WITHIN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY

Obiettivo

THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN TO STUDY CHANGES IN FOOD CONSUMPTION PATTERNS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE RELATIOSHIPS BETWEEN DIET AND HEALTH AND TO IDENTIFY THE MOST EFFECTIVE MEASURES TO OVERCOME CONSUMER CONFUSION AND IGNORANCE ABOUT THE NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF FOOD WITH THE EMPHASIS ON THE ROLE OF NUTRITIONAL LABELLING.

THE STUDY IS BASED ON A REVIEW OF RELEVANT LITERATURE AND DATA, INTERVIEWS AND A WORKSHOP. THE SECTIONS ON FOOD CONSUMPTION SHOW HOW CONSUMER INFLUENCE ON FOOD CHOICE HAS GROWN VERY CONSIDERABLY IN RECENT YEARS AS THE LARGE MULTIPLE RETAILERS COMPETE FOR A SHARE OF FOOD MARKETS. EXAMINATION OF DATA ON FOOD CONSUMPTION IN THE UK, BELGIUM, DENMARK, FRANCE, ITALY, GREECE, NORWAY, SWEDEN, AND THE US SHOWS A NUMBER OF COMMON FEATURES WHICH HAVE EMERGED IN RECENT YEARS. THSES INCLUDE : A DECREASE IN DEMAND FOR MILK WITH A SHIFT IN FAVOUR OF MILK-PROTEIN AND AWAY FROM MILK-FAT, AS SHOWN BY THE GROWTH IN DEMAND FOR LOW-FAT MILKS.THE MARKET FOR MILK DESSERTS AND YOGURT HAS GROWTH RAPIDLY SINCE 1975; GROWTH IN CONSUMPTION OF SOFT NATURAL CHEESE HAS DOUBLE SINCE 1975. COTTAGE CHEESE IS NOW DOMINANT FESH PRODUCT IN THE MARKET; BEEF CONSUMPTION IS DECLINING, PORK IS INCREASING, DEMAND FOR BACON AND HAM IS FALLING, BUT THERE HAS BEEN A PHENOMENAL RISE IN THE CONSUMPTION OF POULTRY; CONVENIENCE FOODS OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS, AND FROM ALL FOOD CATEGORIES, ARE IN GREAT DEMAND; WITHIN THE PAST 10 YEARS, DEMAND FOR FISH HAS BEEN REVIVED; VEGETABLE CONSUMPTION (INCLUDING THAT FOR FROZEN PRODUCTS) HAS INCREASED; CONSUMPTION OF FRUIT HAS INCREASED, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON FRUIT JUICES; WHOLEWHEAT AND WHOLEMEAL BREAD CONSUMPTION HARE MORE THAN DOUBLED IN THE LAST TEN YEARS; SUGAR CONSUMPTION HAS DECLINED; BUTTER CONSUMPTION HAS FALLEN WHILE SOFT MARGARINE CONSUMPTION HAS INCREASED. THE RATIO OF POLYUNSATURATED TO SATURATED FATTY ACIDS HAS INCREASED; BETWEEN 1975 AND 1984 THE AMOUNT OF CARBOHYDRATE IN THE DIED INCREASED BUT THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE CHANGE IN THE PROPORTION OF PROTEIN; FAT FROM ANIMAL SOURCES HAS DECLINED BUT THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN CONSUMPTION OF VEGETABLE FAT.
