CHARACTERISATION OF THE ITALIAN GLASSES AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH CLAY

Ziel

A STUDY FOR AN INTEGRATED TREATMENT OF ALL THE HLW STORED IN ITALY (MCE WASTE) IS CURRENTLY GOING ON. ONE OF THE STUDIED OPTIONS IS BASED ON A PRE-TREATMENT OF THE WASTE, IN ORDER TO CONCENTRATE THE HLW FRACTION, SEPARATING THE MOST PART OF THE INERT SALTS; THIS WORK IS CARRIED OUT IN THE FRAME OF THE EEC R&D PROGRAMME (CONTRACT NO FI1W/192 AND FI1W/0029).

AFTER THE MCE WASTE PRE-TREATMENT, THE VITRIFICATION OF THE RESULTING HLW STREAM IS FORESEEN.

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO SELECT A BOROSILICATE GLASS COMPOSITION SUITABLE FOR THIS HLW STREAM AND TO CHARACTERIZE IT WITH REFERENCE TO THE GEOLOGICAL DISPOSAL. A COMPARATIVE CHARACTERIZATION OF GLASSES OBTAINED EITHER IN LABORATORY OR IN A COLD PLANT (IVET) IS PLANNED.
The objective of this research work was the selection of a borosilicate glass composition suitable for the solidification of the high level waste (HLW) stream coming from the treatment of all the high level wastes stored in Italy and the characterisation of this glass with reference to geological disposal.

The objective of this research work was the selection of a borosilicate glass composition suitable for the solidification of the high level waste (HLW) stream coming from the treatment of all the high level wastes stored in Italy and the characterisation of this glass with reference to geological disposal.
Some glass compositions were prepared and preliminarily characterised. The glass named BAZ was finally selected. A complete characterisation of this glass was carried out in order to evaluate its mechanical, physical and physicochemical properties. A critical evaluation of the glass durability with respect to other nuclear waste glasses was performed.
1. PRELIMINARY SELECTION OF GLASS COMPOSITIONS SUITABLE FOR THE HLW SEMI-LIQUID FRACTION COMING FROM THE SEPARATION PROCESS.
2.1. OPTIMIZATION OF THE SELECTED COMPOSITION WITH REFERENCE TO THE WASTE TO GLASS RATIO.
2.2. PREPARATION OF THE GLASS (LAB-SCALE) USING AS FEED THE SIMULATED WASTE OBTAINED IN SERSE COLD PLANT OPERATIONS.
2.3. PHYSICAL, PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE GLASS.
3. PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE GLASS IN THE COLD IVET PILOT PLANT (FULL SCALE).
