SPECIATION MODEL FOR COMPETITIVE INTERACTION OF METAL IONS WITH ORGANIC MATTER.

Objetivo

DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF A MULTI COMPONENT BINDING MODEL OF POLLUTING IONS TO SOIL ORGANIC MATTER, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT SITE HETEROGENEITY AND ELECTROCHEMICAL EFFECTS.

FOR THE PREDICTION OF THE BINDING OF INORGANIC POLLUTANTS TO DIFFERENT SOILS IT IS NECESSARY TO ESTABLISH FUNDAMENTAL RELATIONS THAT DESCRIBE THE BINDING BEHAVIOUR AS A FUNCTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS SUCH AS PH, SALT CONTENT, CONCENTRATION COMPETITOR IONS AND AS A FUNCTION OF REACTIVE SOIL COMPONENTS SUCH AS SOIL ORGANIC MATTER, CLAY AND METAL-OXIDES.
FOR CLAY AND METAL-OXIDES FUNDAMENTAL MODELS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AND THERE IS A REASONABLE UNDERSTANDING ON THE INTERACTION OF THESE SORBENTS WITH POLLUTING IONS. IN THE CASE OF SOIL ORGANIC MATTER SUCH INSIGHT IS STILL VERY LIMITED AND NO SATISFACTORY OR GENERALLY APPLICABLE MODELS EXIST.

IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO MODEL THE COMPETITIVE BINDING OF IONS OVER A WIDE RANGE OF RELEVANT CONDITIONS SUCCESSFULLY, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO DISCRIMINATE BETWEEN INTRINSIC SITE HETEROGENEITY AND SURFACE CHARGE EFFECTS ON THE BINDING BEHAVIOUR. IN PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN GAINED WITH MODELING COMPETITIVE BINDING OF IONS TO VARIABLY CHARGED HETEROGENEOUS METAL-OXIDES. BASED ON THIS ESPERIENCE AND EXTENSIVE LITERATURE RESEARCH A MULTI-COMPONENT BINDING MODEL FOR SOIL ORGANIC MATTER WILL BE DEVELOPED, TAKING SITE HETEROGENEITY AND ELECTROCHEMICAL ASPECTS INTO ACCOUNT. THE MODEL WILL FIRST BE TESTED USING LITERATURE DATA FOR FULVIC ACIDS, HUMIC ACIDS AND SYNTHETIC POLYELECTROLYTES. TO TEST THE MODEL THOROUGHLY FOR CONDITIONS RELEVANT IN THE SOIL SOLUTION AN EXTENSIVE DATA SET HAS TO BE OBTAINED BY CAREFULLY EXPERIMENTATION.
